I heard a review of this novel on NPR. The author sounded interesting and intelligent and I thought the genre of "magical realism" sounded cool, so I ordered this book soon thereafter. I finished it quickly (mainly just to get it over with,) and I was not very impressed. The author has an annoying voice and way of describing the fictional world. There didn't seem to be any emotional evocations for me personally, I just didn't care; the story was not moving. Also there didn't seem to be any philosophical meanings embedded in the text, it was uninteresting to speculate on meanings...
This tale seems to go on and on without much action. Authors command of the English language is impressive but it is not light reading, you have to pay attention or you get lost in the verbage.
