Beautiful and effective... but with a few quirks.
This cube-shape glass tank, sitting atop a rectangular cabinet, makes a striking visual impression for what is after all a modestly priced and sized aquarium. The frame-less one piece glass, flat glass lid and separate filtration section, hidden by a black plastic divider panel, all make for an exceptionally neat setup, with little to distract the eye from your fish and plants. The supplied LED lighting, heater and header unit (pump) are all well up to the job in hand. The pump has ample power and I find that reducing the flow to about 50% is about right. The rear filtration compartment has plenty of space for additional filtration material like sponge and ceramic noodles. It's not all good news though, and there are a few quirks that you may or may not consider to be worth it for those ... It's not all good news though, and there are a few quirks that you may or may not consider to be worth it for those great aesthetics. Firstly, you need to keep an eye on water level in the rear section... if not set up with attention paid to flow rate, feed quantities and filter material, it will drop to a point where the header unit begins to blow air and potentially run dry. The dry pump issue is exacerbated by the supplied slot-in filter cartridges, which although extremely neat and initially appealing, tend to block relatively quickly (within a few days). They can be cleaned but this will be a problem if you go away for a week. These also require regular replacement and are more costly than a standard wool/sponge/noodle setup. Finally, one of the two cartridges appears to contain carbon, which you may or may not want as part of your permanent setup. Thankfully it is perfectly possible to run nano tanks without the cartridges, using the slotted container for filter wool or sponge. I find that when set up in this way, the header unit remains below water for up to two weeks without touching the filter (not that you should do this, but we all go away sometimes!) Another minor irritant is that occasionally one or two fry can escape into the rear compartments, from which it can be tricky to extract them: you need the smallest net you can get and a lot of patience! In spite of these gripes, I really rate the aqua nano tanks. This is my second 40, and I also own the larger 60 and the smaller 30 and 25 models. Nothing at this price beats them for visual appeal and once you learn how to manage the quirks they are effective and fairly easy to maintain. This model, the 40, is in some ways the nicest one: that "tower" effect is not achieved by the larger but rectangular 60 or by the diminutive 25. The 30 pulls it off, but by virtue of relative smallness, to much less effect.
