The first thing to consider about this game is: Do you like racing games? If you do, then you will find this game quite interesting, since it's a footracing game. If you don't then you probably will not like this game. The worst part of this game is the controls. They almost beg the question: What controls? It's very difficult to direct your character in the intended direction. However, this game does boast 32bit graphics, with CD quality sound, and I must say, that the soundtrack sounds much better than the Sonic Gems collection version. In fact, this game has a few minor differences from that port. There are some different sounds, the graphics in the port are vamped up a little, and there are no loading times in the port, and finally they sound in the original is much better. Whether or not you should buy this game all depends on whether or not you really want it. I personally bought it because i'm a collector, and i'm trying to get every sonic game, and this was one of the few that stood in my way. For collectors, this is a great game, it's fairly rare, yet relatively cheap(espicially when compared to Sonic Jam.) As for my final feeling on this game; I am quite excited to have it, beacause I am a collector, and I enjoy racing games. As for the feeling at the time of this game's release, it was considered a failure, since few people had a saturn compared to a PS1. Overall, I would reccomend this game to collectors, or those trying to relive their childhood. Happy Bidding!Read full review
Many people hate this game and describe it as "bad," but I believe Sonic R is the best racing games ever made and easily one of my favorite Sonic the Hedgehog games. What makes Sonic R unique is that the gameplay is completely original. It combines two different genres together: platformer and racing game. Unlike other games, like Mario Kart, the characters in Sonic R race on foot and can jump, fly, glide, etc. It is fairly easy to simply race to the finish and beat the game, but the true fun of Sonic R is that the level design is variable. Each course is like am maze, with multiple branching paths, with shortcuts and mysteries to explore. There are hidden characters to unlike and bonus items (like Chaos Emeralds) to find. The only flaw is that the game is too short with only 5 levels. But because each level contains so much exploration and different paths, it allows the game to have a great amount of replay value. Plus, the music is so fun and uplifting that it gets stuck in your head! Overall, Sonic R is an incredible game that gets unfairly hated on because most people simply did not understand its unique mix of platforming and racing.Read full review

This is one of the classic sega saturn games of its time. Seeming to be a simple concept (tossing the sonic characters into a race setting) paid off for the sega team. Not only did this spawn several other sonic genre racing games, this was probably also the catalyst that had them included as guest stars in other racing games. PROS Despite being a racing game has that Sonic game feel to it. One of the better graphic games on the saturn. Good background tracks. CONS It's a little too short for my liking. Replayability is based on your liking for racing the same few tracks over and over.

I bought this product in order to add to my collection of Sonic games and was not disappointed. Even though it is a little on the short side, only 5 tracks, it does provide hours of fun. There are seven chaos emeralds to find and collect as well as 20 sonic tokens that are needed to unlock the characters. Also, the two player mode allows you to race with a friend and have some fun. As well, the game offers many different modes such as playing tag, collecting balloons and just plain racing. Compared to other racing games on the Saturn I rank this as one of the best. The controls only take a short time to get used to, and contrary to the popular belief there is a button in order to make your character accelerate. Furthermore, the music whihc make not be for everyone does add a certain appeal to the game. The music is very happy and is nice to listen to as your racing. Overall, Sonic R is an awesome game and a must have for a Saturn collector or a Sonic fan!Read full review
