I think it will become a children's Christmas classic movie and book for years to come. It is beautifully illustrated and has meaningful content.

The book was more or less fine- a few tears on the jacket. But the packaging was a Digiorno pizza box that was tattered, smelly and sloppy. Spend the two minutes to pick up a free clean cardboard box from the grocery store vs one that had food directly in it. Just weird.

I already own this storybook but my original book was lost and I have been trying to find the same one to replace it with. My original had a special authors page that was burned and signed by Chris Van Allsburg and to this day I haven't been able to find one just like it. I purchased this one in hopes that it was the one....but it wasn't. My youngest child is in kindergarten this year and when I recieved the book I decided to donate it to his classroom so children in years to come can share in this wonderful childrens christmas classic! I have been sharing this story with my own children for 17 years and when it is time to pack up all the christmas decorations, this book goes with them so it always seems like a new story from year to year! It has been incorporated as one of our family traditions every year!Read full review
My son is at that age where he is in awe of trains and in awe of Santa Claus. We have seen the movie over and over so, I wanted my son to have the book. Chris Van Allsburg writes a simple story of a boy on Christmas Eve, whose friends have lost the magic of Christmas, waits to hear the sound of Santa's sleigh. If you are looking for this book to be just like the movie, sorry it's not. It is a simple story about a boy who got on a train and saw Santa. I found it to be very nice, quick, easy reading material for me and my son. Allsburg's words are simple and understandable for a young reader but, at the same time it flows with detail and imagery that someone of any age would appreciate. Allsberg also did the illustrations. Like his writing style, at first glance may appear a simple children's book illustration but, looking closer the depth of his art work is evident. I recommend this for anyone that has seen the movie and for those who have not.Read full review
The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg is an excellent story with outstanding artwork that stirs the wondering spirit of the child within all of us. It received the prestiged Caldecott Medal through extensive review by nationally recognized experts in children's literature. The book inspired the 2004 movie of the same name that was a featured Best Ever Christmas Film in 2005. This book is a perfect addition to anyone's collection of prized reading. Enjoy . . . and B E L I E V E !
Loved the movie when I saw it Christmas(2005), decided to buy my daughter this book as a Christmas (2006) present, we both love it, funny thing is she bought me one too! Being that Chris VanAllburg is a Michigan native gave me more incentive to purchase this book, you see I too am from Michigan, hope to one day have him sign it. It's a well written story that touches the heart, great for young & old alike, the graphics pull you into the story, makes one feel like you're a part of it. Can't wait to share this book with my grandchildren. I think it will be a classic one day! Am very pleased with my purchase of the Polar Express Book.
We recently took the Grand Canyon Polar Express train ride with grand children and great grand children. During the ride this book is carried up and down the train and shown to all the children. I wanted all of them to remember the time we spent together and the book seemed like a great way to keep it in their memories. The story is charming, the pictures lovely and it will make a Christmas gift to remember how we all rode together on the train ride. I recommend this little book to parents for their children even if they are not taking the train ride. It makes a wonderful bedtime story at this time of year.
I love this book! It has become a classic. Van Allsburg created a wonderful vision of the North Pole. The book encourages the use of our imagination and belief in something that, as children, we held dear. I purchased it because, as an elementary reading teacher, I used it for sharing and for creative writing. I had fallen in love with the book and wanted my own copy again. I left my original copy at the school when I retired. A plus with this purchase is that the music was included. I am a big fan of Josh Groban's music. I look forward to reading it again this Christmas!
This is a wonderful children's book telling the story of a young boy's belief in Santa Claus and Christmas. I bought the book to read to my granddaughter before she embarks on the Polar Express Train Ride in a neighboring city, and so that she would have her own copy to cherish year after year. The audio CD is also a plus, as she can listen to the story whenever no one is available to read to her. I am a former school librarian, and can vouch for this book's popularity among children.
My kids fell in love with the movie at first site. We later purchased the Lionel train set including the bell ornament and some of the characters. This book was a nice addition to our little collection! The photos are right out of the movie, and a majority of the storyline is exactly the same. I can't say there is really anything I don't like. It's a nice synopsis for a bedtime story or any time. There is some difference from the movie version (other than the obvious parts left out to shorten it), but it's slight, and I can't even recall what it is right now. I'm glad to have this short children's book when it's too close to bedtime, and I can offer to read rather than let them watch the whole movie.
