    If you love Tolkien, and liked the theatrical versions, watch the extended versions too!

    Having more and extended scenes in this version actually seems to make the film carry on faster. The variations in pace are refreshing. The character development provides more nuances. I never thought there would be a live action Lord of the Rings or Hobbit until the Peter Jackson films, and as a repeated reader of the books over the decades, I must say I think they got it 90+% right. The variations from the books mostly work for me, because while Professor Tolkien had many talents, screenwriting wasn't one of them. And more people now read the books! The appendices included with all the film versions have been entertaining and delightful. For those of us who can't get enough of Tolkien's work, it's wonderful the films were made by people who feel the same way! The additional material ...

    The title is what it is; the middle of a 3-movie story about Bilbo Baggins

    I'm a Tolkien freak. Putting his books on the screen in the quality I see is a fantastic view for me, and this set was new high-quality DVDs that played wonderfully. The extended version is the better one, at least from this Tolkien freak's point of view.
