The Gripping Beast introduces readers to a land full of ancient history and modern day intrigue. Orkney Island in northern Scotland was first inhabited by the Picts and then the Vikings and the current residents now believe that witches live among them.Margot Wadley uses the dramatic background to debut her heroine, Isabel Garth, a young American woman who has come to the island to illustrate her deceased father's note-books. As soon as Isabel steps off the ferry she is accosted by a beautiful young woman who warns her to leave. Andrew, a young boy she met on the ferry, proudly announces that the woman, Thora, is a witch, . Isabel doesn't know what to think and as she continues her vacation she starts to feel that maybe Thora was right -- maybe she is in danger. She is puzzled by the behavior of two men who seem to be following her and by the rash of accidents that are plaguing her. Then, while out sketching one day, Isabel finds Thora's body -- apparently murdered.In a dramatic climax, a life is lost, a life is saved, and the treasure at the root of all the violence disappears forever., On the windswept Orkney Islands off the north coast of Scotland, the mysterious rings, standing stones, and elaborate tombs of ancient peoples still survive, as do the ruins of the Picts who followed them and the monuments and graves of the Vikings, who ruled the Islands for hundreds of years. Today's inhabitants, though gentle, modern Scots, try to keep alive their ever-present, turbulent history and the rich folklore of their ancestors. Margot Wadley uses this dramatic background to introduce her heroine, Isabel Garth, an American woman who travels to Orkney to mourn her father and to illustrate his journals-the memories of his childhood there. On the sea journey she meets Johanna MacLeod and her son, Andrew. The boy tells Isabel that a fellow passenger is a Viking witch, a claim his chiding mother denies. But as soon as Isabel steps off the ferry Thora, the freckled, blue-jeaned, self-styled witch, accosts Isabel with a warning of danger if she remains in the Islands. Isabel dismisses the warning as theatrics, but as the days go by she is plagued by a rash of accidents. Could Thora be right?Maybe she is in danger. But from whom? As the list of suspects grows, Isabel becomes unwillingly drawn into the search for a missing treasure. Then Isabel finds a body.     Excellent seller. Package was delayed ( by bad weather) and then misplaced at PO( placed in wrong box #) but I contacted the seller and they responded quickly and I got my item today.     Purchasing form this company can at times be frustrating due to items never arriving, very low shipping time and the inability to track the items. But I gave them another chance and purchased many maps and books over the past few months and have received all of them. Last year, it was hit and miss. All items were in the condition as described. Packaging is minimal. The only downside is extremely slow shipping. I rate them a C+. Nothing to gloat about but eventually you will get what you wanted.
