    Wow wow wow after watching the hbo mini series I felt compelled to purchase this book. I can't put it down, it's fascinating. The struggle that these gentlemen went through in ww2 is beyond belief at times. I am truly grateful to every soldier and marine that fought this war. Without these guys risking their lives we wouldn't be the world we are today. Peace and respect....

    First hand account of combat in the pacific theatre, written after a few decades from notes so need to hold back on the unpleasant realities that are often glossed over like the (lack) of personal hygiene, and being on an active battlefield for weeks in the tropics with decay, smells and maggots. No glorification but objective description of how it happend and was viewed at the time by the marines involved
