Diese Arbeit geht der Frage nach, inwiefern das Einsetzen von bestimmten Stoffen und Motiven der polnischen Geschichte in der deutschen Erzahlprosa den im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts in Deutschland erfolgten Identitatsbildungsprozess foerderte. Analysiert werden Romane, Erzahlungen und Novellen bekannter Autoren wie Gustav Freytag, Heinrich Laube, Harro Harring oder Nataly von Eschtruth, aber auch heutzutage in Vergessenheit geratener, im 19. Jahrhundert jedoch wohlbekannter und gern gelesener Schriftsteller, wie zum Beispiel Julie Burow, Lucian Herbert, August Lewald, Marie von Roskowska oder Gregor Samarow. Im Rahmen der behandelten Stoffe vom Untergang der Adelsrepublik und dem Freiheitskampf der Polen - treten sowohl historische Persoenlichkeiten, wie Tadeusz Kosciuszko, der polnische Koenig Stanislaw August Poniatowski oder Emilia Plater und stereotype Gestalten, wie der lasterhafte Adlige, der leibeigene Bauer oder der konspirierende Pole, als auch Schlagworte Finis Poloniae oder Polen als Bollwerk motivisch auf.
