Additional Information
ZULU DAWN depicts the bloody Battle of Isandhlwana, in which 30,000 Zulu warriors wiped out nearly 1,500 British troops stationed in Natal. The film focuses most sharply on the preparations for battle and the political situation in the region at that time. Taking Zulu chief Cetshwayo's defiant stance on tribal customs as a declaration of war, General Lord Chelmsford sends in hundreds of British troops in order to squash the spear-carrying Africans with superior fire power. The sheer number of Zulus, however, overwhelms the British infantry.

    Fairly accurate prequel to ZULU.

Released in 1979 for the hundredth anniversary of the battle, this is a fairly accurate recreation of the arrogance of Lord Chelmsford which led to the massacre at Isandlwana, the only bit they failed to show was the eclipse which is recorded as having happened during the height of the Zulu attack which, coupled with the smoke from the Martini-Henry's, helped the Zulu overwhelm the column.

  • Most critical review

    Great film, poor DVD

This is a great film, but the quality of the DVD is awful. The picture is very "noisy" on many of the dark scenes. Possibly it has been copied from tape, not from the original film stock. But whatever the reason, it seriously detracts from the enjoyment of the film.

  • One of the best

Excellent film really brings home the gritty and utter mistakes that was made leading up to the utter defeat that Britain suffered at the hands of zulus would recommend to anyone that likes these sort of films
