Synopsis
From the celebrated author of The Secret Life of Bees comes a novel about two unforgettable American women. Hetty "Handful" Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke's daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women. Kidd's sweeping novel is set in motion on Sarah's eleventh birthday, when she is given ownership of ten year old Handful, who is to be her handmaid. We follow their remarkable journeys over the next thirty five years, as both strive for a life of their own, dramatically shaping each other's destinies and forming a complex relationship marked by guilt, defiance, estrangement and the uneasy ways of love. Inspired by the historical figure of Sarah Grimke, Kidd goes beyond the record to flesh out the rich interior lives of all of her characters, both real and invented, including Handful's cunning mother, Charlotte, who courts danger in her search for something better. This exquisitely written novel is a triumph of storytelling that looks with unswerving eyes at a devastating wound in American history, through women whose struggles for liberation, empowerment, and expression will leave no reader unmoved., From the celebrated author of The Secret Life of Bees and the forthcoming novel The Book of Longings , an inspiring holiday read about two unforgettable American women. Writing at the height of her narrative and imaginative gifts, Sue Monk Kidd presents a masterpiece of hope, daring, the quest for freedom, and the desire to have a voice in the world. As the stories build to a riveting climax, Handful will endure loss and sorrow, finding courage and a sense of self in the process. Sarah will experience crushed hopes, betrayal, unrequited love, and ostracism before leaving Charleston to find her place alongside her fearless younger sister, Angelina, as one of the early pioneers in the abolition and women's rights movements. Got the TV series combat, season 2 volume one from the seller and they shipped it out fast and well wrapped up for the journey. It arrived earlier than listed and in the condition they listed it as being. This is not a series easy to find out side of complete box set yet alone for the great price they sold it for. The seller showed great communication and I'd buy from them again without question. Good series and good seller.

Book is beautiful, but jacket is worn more than the pictures. Restorable, but annoying. Only wrapped in shipping plastic with no padding or other protection, but fortunately it came through ok. Overall I'm happy with the book, and seller gave a very good price, but should show more better pictures and pack the books better. Anyway, this will be a great addition to my Kubrick collection, and I can recommend the seller.

    great read!

I love Sue Monk Kidd's writing and this book is no exception. She did a wonderful job with the heroine's life story (which is true) and explaining the conditions in the south during a terrible time. You are hooked after the 2nd chapter!

  • Gift for my daughter's birthday.

Knew she wanted this book and pleasantly surprised her with it. After reading she shared with me and I thoroughly enjoyed the story even though very heartbreaking at times.

  • Compelling, authentic

This book was based on historical women who were heroic. It referenced the authentic treatment of African Americans in the South, and that it was possible to rise above one's raising. I loved it.
