Die Stadt Rom und ihre Monumente waren in der Spatantike fur Kaiser, Senatorenstand und christliche Autoren Bezugspunkt der Selbstdarstellung und Fixpunkt des eigenen Geschichtsbildes. Doch waren sie es fur diese Protagonisten nicht in gleicher Weise. Verschiedene Geschichtsbilder bestimmten nicht nur die Auswahl der Monumente, denen das jeweilige Interesse gehoerte. Sie bestimmten auch die Bedeutung, die der Vorstellung einer roemischen Denkmaltopographie uberhaupt zukam. Der Untersuchungszeitraum reicht von der Einrichtung der Tetrarchie im Jahr 284 bis zur Eroberung Roms durch die Westgoten 410. Am Ende dieses Jahrhunderts erreichte die christliche Auseinandersetzung mit der roemischen Topographie einen vorlaufigen Abschluss, der vor allem in der Dichtung des Prudentius fassbar wird. Die christliche Diskussion der roemischen Denkmaler hat - mehr als die kaiserliche Sorge um die Ewige Stadt oder die senatorische Selbstdarstellung in Rom - die Vorstellung der roemischen Denkmaler als einer historischen Stadtlandschaft fur die Spatantike und daruber hinaus gepragt.
