The focus with my k10 is great, it hunts a bit but I learned a trick the second day of shotting on how to stop that. The lens is in excllent shape and a joy to use. I really like the fact it does not extend when held in a down position, like all of my other zooms. I have shot about 200 soccer pictures with this lens and they all are better than my kit zoom I got with my Pentax ist ds 28-210mm. I like the ability to manual focus when in automatic mode. Had to put a covering over the lens, got caught in the rain but the camera is WR so it worked out good. I great lens that is giving me a lot of great action pictures. I can't believe this is not been a more popular lens because of the sharpness I am getting from the 300 (450) zoom is exciting. I have some good shots of wild life around my house and the optics are typical Pentax quality, outstanding. Up til now I have thought my rear screen was not so sharp to review pictures but this lens has shown me that all it takes is good optics to bring out the best this camera has to offer. I don't know why I waited so long to purchase a good lens. Thanks to this lens I am enjoying photography so much more. I have been a pentax fan for fourty years and had film cameras like the K1000, ME super, LX my favorite. The first digital ist DS, still have that and I will try this lens on it soon. This lens stayed on my camera 90% of the weekend, using my Pentax 50 1.4 and 28-105 just a few times.Read full review
I use the Pentax SMC DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED lens more than a week and I can see that this item is a really good option for its price. The build quality is about in line to the typical Pentax DA consumer zoom lenses - there's nothing wrong with that. The construction is based on a common combination of plastic and metal parts assembled with pretty tight tolerance. Both the zoom and focus control rings operate fairly smooth. The lens has no internal AF motor and relies on the slotted drive-screw operated by the camera. This generates some noise during AF operations and the AF speed is comparatively slow although reasonably accurate on my Pentax K-7. The Pentax SMC DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED lens is larger than the Pentax SMC-DA 50-200mm f/4-5.6 ED lens (112x71mm, 440g - compared to 67x79mm, 260g), on the other hand - its zoom range is wider, and that was my conscious choice.Read full review
I bought this lens for my Pentax KX to take pictures at my Grandson's sporting events. Even though this is the kit version of the more expensive DA lens, the optics are the same and I'm very satisfied with the image quality. Unlike the DA lens, you can't manually focus when in automatic focus mode, but that has not been an issue for me. The auto focus is fairly quick in good light conditions, but it does seem to hunt a bit in low light conditions. Overall, I'm very satisfied with this lens. For my occasional use, it definitely fulfills my needs for a telephoto lens. And, the price was right - about half the price of a new DA lens.
I bought this lens to replace a damaged 55-200mm Pentax. This lens will become my everyday lens for my K-x. It gives very good image quality in all zoom ranges that I have used. I have gotten some very good moon shots at 300mm showing details of individual craters. In the 50 - 55 mm range it is as sharp as a couple of prime lenses that I have been using. It is much superior to a Sigma 70-300 that I had been using. I am very pleased with this lens and the price was excellent.
I use this lens with a Pentax K20D body. With software I can take a picture of someone 100 meters away and zoom in close enough to see the stitching in there clothes. I works extremely well in medium to low light conditions, as with all zoom lens it helps to have a tripod when pushing this lens to its limits. jf
