  • Folk metal with an emphasis on folk

This is a tricky album to review; on its own, it's superb. When taken in context of previous Skyclad offerings, however, things get more complex. This was the first full-length all-new album from Skyclad after their line-up changed vitally with the exit of Martin Walkyier (of Sabbat and now The Clan Destined) and his replacement by Kevin Ridley. The two vocalists have very different styles, basically summarised by the direction from which they approach the concept of "folk metal". Walkyier, from an essentially thrash metal background, approached it with the emphasis on metal, and folk took a back seat; under Ridley, however, Skyclad's sound has become folk-oriented, with what is generally folk music with heavy, metal instrumentation. When a particular song is more metal than folk, ...

  • Metal and Folk, Rockon

Catchy folk melodies weaved through harcore, powerfull riffs and solos. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra are featured, which makes for a really epic sound! Kevin Ridley has a flawless, yet unique voice and the musicians are obviously a very talented bunch. Lyrics are clever and politically whitty and will have you singing them all day, especially "Parliament of Fools"! Some odd time signatures and various folk instruments makes for an all round well composed album that is definetely worth buying if you like to look for metal with a twist.

  • Skyclad-A Semblance Of Normality

Just looking at the album cover tells us a lot about this release. The logo has changed signifigantly (it's much simpler) and the cover art is along the same lines (looks distinctly different to anything Duncan Storr would produce). Two things we associate with a Skyclad release up to this point. This is a different Skyclad, as you can also hear. It's also the first full lenght of new material with Kevin Ridley taking over on vocals. It's still Folk Metal, and good Folk Metal at that but this sounds vastly different from any past albums. So keep all this in mind when you check this out, because it is likely to not be what you expect.
