This sharpener is an all-metal device. It has a pair of helical blades that do the sharpening. It will mount in any plane, as the chrome outer box can be removed and attached in 90 degree increments so that it will 'hang' down' no matter how the head is mounted. If I'd paid attention, I'd workshop! I mounted one to my metal peg-board using pins and a magnet on a wooden base have bought it in a big box store for twice the price but I thought it was gimmicky until I read the eBay feedback after searching for alternatives. So, I bought two. One for my office, one for my and the other to my wire shelving using a wood strip and some hanger clips. This is an old-fashioned (no batteries, thank heavens) device that works like a champ and has that old-school quality and effectiveness. When I read that a school teacher uses it, I was sold. My old X-Acto with a plastic hopper that broke and needed epoxy was $2 more than this gem, just because it had a suction base. This is the sharpener for the discerning buyer, bar none! The sharpener itself is very good, but I had so much trouble with the mounting. The screws included with it stripped easily, so that I couldn't get it installed. Removing them after they were halfway in was worse, because with just a little pressure, part of the base cracked. Luckily, I was able to get it off and then used my own screws to get it mounted. It works great now, but I recommend taking the weak screws into account when choosing a surface for the sharpener.

I have used several wall/table/hand actuated carbon point enablers; the closest I got to "sharp" was the sharpener this replaced. I wish I had gotten this when I was first looking for a "decent" sharpener 15 years ago. It is smooth, welcomes several sizes from those thin golf pencils to the super thick goof off pencils. I tested it on B2 (perfect) 4H (also perfect) Schwan all surface utility black wax (perfect) colour wax and water colour pencils (perfect) and charcoal soft, medium and hard (fail, but, I think charcoal pencils need to be sharpened carefully with either a knife or 40-80 grit sand paper). Not sure how it would handle 4B to 9B. Easy to install, just used a drill, thin bit and starting pilot spot. If one wants a reliable, sturdy pencil sharpener, this is good.

I bought their battery operated one and it just wouldn't do the job and kept breaking the lead.... This manual pencil sharpener, I bought one for my husband to put into his shop and when the battery operated one flubbed on me, I decided to order one of these for myself. I'll probably never go back to any other kind of pencil sharpener again. One thing to be aware of. You will probably be better off buying longer screws than the ones that are in the package because over time, those short screws are going to wobble out. Go with a screw twice the length and you should be okay.

I have tried X-ACTO's electric pencil sharpener and it is no good. Breaks the lead before it gets sharp. This hand crank sharpener if very good and easy to use. I can sharpen the pencil to a sharp point and not break the lead. Great quality and very inexpensive.
