About this product

Product Information

A new edition of bestselling author Bill Bryson's compelling and concise biography of William Shakespeare, to mark the 400th anniversary of his death in 2016. Examining centuries of myths, half-truths and downright lies, Bill Bryson makes sense of the man behind the masterpieces. As he leads us through the crowded streets of Elizabethan England, he brings to life the places and characters that inspired Shakespeare's work, with his trademark wit and accessibility. Along the way he delights in the inventiveness of Shakespeare's language, which has given us so many of the indispensable words and phrases we use today, and celebrates the Bard's legacy to our literature, culture and history. Drawing together information from a vast array of sources, this is a masterful account of the life and works of William Shakespeare, one of the most famous and most enigmatic people ever to have lived - not to mention a classic piece of Bill Bryson, author of 'A Short History of Nearly Everything' and 'Notes from a Small Island'.

Prompt delivery. One page was creased but otherwise good condition. I was disappointed that I received a book with the older style front cover than advertised.

    Another Bryson Winner

A work of scholarship, Bryson is incapable of writing a dull book. It is the most accessible story of the life and times of William Shakespeare and neatly debunks all the conspiracy theorists who claim that Shakespeare didn't write all the plays, poetry and sonnets which the world has accepted as his.

  • Fun to read

Insight on the life and time of Shakespeare written with humour. It was surprising to learn how little we know of Shakespeare. Recommended for anyone who likes him and/or interested in history and one to have a good time. I wish it were longer.

  • BILL ON BILL

Bill Bryson on Bill Shakespeare. I think they would have got on! Hugely informative book, highly readable. Not to be missed.

  • Worth a lot more than I paid

Reading this book made me realise just why Shakespeare as a playwright is and was so good - worth every penny and - to be fair - a good deal more.
