About this product

Product Information

Workmen in the small market town of Lydmouth are demolishing an old cottage. A sledgehammer smashes into what looks like a solid wall. Instead, layers of wallpaper conceal the door of a locked cupboard which holds a box - and in the box is the skeleton of a young baby. Items within the box suggest that the baby was entombed early in the nineteenth century, but when another man is also found dead, the evidence suggests that the baby's death is more recent than it seems and that a killer is on the loose . . . Journalist Jill Francis, newly arrived from London, has her first assignment.

  • A gripping wonderfully written series.

I'm reading this series by Andrew Taylor (a brilliant and underrated author) in order. This is the first of eight. It introduces Inspector Richard Thornhill and journalist Jill Frances. I grew up in the 1950s and the book took me right back there. Taylor's understanding of his characters is beautifully realised. The depth of their emotional dilemmas never tips over into melodrama. The police procedure of the time is startling! I have just started the second book, A Mortal Sickness' and was hooked from page 1. I highly recommend this series.

  • Good introduction to the Lydmouth murder series of Andrew Taylor

This is the first in the Lydmouth series and introduces the policeman Richard Thornhill and his murder investigations. He has left the London CID and gone to the Lydmouth CID in Lydmouth. He has taken his wife and 2 children with him in a small house and a small income. Shortly after his arrival a dead baby is found in an abandoned and excavated inn in Lydmouth. It is assumed that the baby belonged to a victorian murderer who was hanged. Then a war hero is wounded in a car accident and is now unable to look after himself. His daughter reluctantly temporarily comes over to help and look after him. Then his home is threatened and items robbed/damaged. Then he is found dead in mysterious circumstances! Thornhill has to find out the facts and unravel the truth! It is confusing and difficult to ...
