About this product

Product Information

Why are more American adolescent girls prey to depression, eating disorders, addictions, and suicide attempts than ever before? According to Dr. Mary Pipher, a clinical psychologist who has treated girls for more than twenty years, we live in a look-obsessed, media-saturated, "girl-poisoning" culture. Despite the advances of feminism, escalating levels of sexism and violence--from undervalued intelligence to sexual harassment in elementary school--cause girls to stifle their creative spirit and natural impulses, which, ultimately, destroys their self-esteem. Yet girls often blame themselves or their families for this "problem with no name" instead of looking at the world around them. Here, for the first time, are girls' unmuted voices from the front lines of adolescence, personal and painfully honest. By laying bare their harsh day-to-day reality, Reviving Ophelia issues a call to arms and offers parents compassion, strength, and strategies with which to revive these Ophelias' lost sense of self.

    Reviving Ophelia

On the surface our society has changed in many ways but the reality of child abuse, its predictable patterns, and the resulting trauma and physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional fallout have not. This book is an excellent beginner’s glimpse into the dynamics of adolescent child abuse. One copy for me, two as must-gifts for siblings.

my only complaint is that she, and the author of "the psychology of women" use the words "girl" and "woman" interchangeably with "female" and the same with the words man, boy and male. that’s only because im reading it for academic reasons and in my view its not very academic to pretend other possibilities than a female who is a girl or a male who is a boy. anyway my psych prof said that anyone with a daughter should sleep with this book under their pillow. i would extend that to anyone who doesnt live on a planet solely inhabited by those who identify as "men" especially those of us who identify of girls who have a hard time supporting other girls. something this society does not do nearly enough of.

  • Very helpful to everybody who has adolescent kids.

It's great book which helps you to understand what can heppened with your daughter when she is an adolescent. You can find a lot of exaples and different situations and stories about other kids and it's making you think and pay attention to your child. I really want my daughter to pass this period of her life smooth and easy and be near as her best friend when she will have a lot of questions. I would recommend this book to every mom who has a daughter.

  • Not a How-to

I purchased this book because I will be teaching a gender based class next year. This book is a bit difficult to become engaged in. It has a number of case studies and never specifically gives the "how adults can help" "saving the selves of adolescent girls." In other words, I was looking for specific advice and it gave only vague suggestions. Interesting reading though, about different outcomes that parents and others did not expect from their own parenting styles. I highly recommend Micheal Gurian if you are looking for some brain based research about educating, parenting or just being around young boys and girls.
