About this product

Product Information

The human figure plays a leading role in Rosso Vivo , which has text and images printed on blood red paper. The colour of blood, bodies and their mutations are present in fashion, music, cinema and - most of all - in life itself. This book is an exploration of a body that has traversed centuries of art, a body drawn directly from the Western iconographic tradition, a body investigated, unveiled and displayed, the wounded, racked, dissected, tortured, tormented and crucified: the body represented and presented as a tendency to the extreme. Delving into issues such as violence, eroticism, alienation, fantasy, sexuality, religion, genetic engineering and morality, the body in comtemporary art is contrasted with its representation in works by Caravaggio, Antoine Wiertz, Artemisia Gentileschi and Hieronymous Bosch. Li nks with fashion and music are provided by images of Alexander McQueen and Keith (Prodigy) respectively. Other artists (their works and texts) include: Ron Athey, Aziz Cucher, Franko B., Betty Bee, Louise Bourgeois, Reuven Cohen, Simon Costin, Renee Cox, Janieta Eyre, Jan Fabre, Cesare Fullone, Thomas Grunfeld, Gerd Holzwarth, Laura Masserdotti, Yasumasa Morimura, Orlan, Pierre et Gilles, Andres Serrano, Cindy Sherman, Nicholas Sinclair, Annie Sprinkle, Stelarc, Jana Sterbak and Joel-Peter Witkin.
