Just before the German invasion of Russia in June 1941 Hitler ordered a heavy tank mounting an 88mm gun be built for the German Army. The need for this machine became urgent once it was discovered that the Red Army was fielding superior tanks in the form of the T-34 and KV-1. The Tiger I tank was created in 1942, the Wehrmacht's first armour capable of using the 88mm gun, preferring firepower over mobility. In 1944 it was followed by the even heavier Tiger II. The tiger tank story.
If you are like me , interested in how the tiger developed and the changes to construction , and use, or how the tiger groups were used, this book is of limited value, the pictures are the same old same old. The story of the tank is in my opinion copied from other books and rare worded into this book. If you are a modeller looking for detail in how the tanks were camouflaged or how stowage was implemented, again not for you. I personally was not impressed. There are gaps in the description of the use of the tiger in later parts of the war as it was coming to an end, the is no mention of the smaller panzer gruppe a such as gruppe fehrmann , who were no more successful than anyone else . But they are not mentioned at all.
