So begins The Monsters of Templeton , a novel spanning two centuries: part a contemporary story of a girl's search for her father, part historical novel, and part ghost story. In the wake of a disastrous love affair with her older, married archaeology professor at Stanford, brilliant Wilhelmina Cooper arrives back at the doorstep of her hippie mother-turned-born-again-Christian's house in Templeton, NY, a storybook town her ancestors founded that sits on the shores of Lake Glimmerglass. Upon her arrival, a prehistoric monster surfaces in the lake bringing a feeding frenzy to the quiet town, and Willie learns she has a mystery father her mother kept secret Willie's entire life. The beautiful, broody Willie is told that the key to her biological father's identity lies somewhere in her family's history, so she buries herself in the research of her twisted family tree and finds more than she bargained for as a chorus of voices from the town's past--some sinister, all fascinating--rise up around her to tell their side of the story. In the end, dark secrets come to light, past and present day are blurred, and old mysteries are finally put to rest. As described. Packing was a waterproof plastic sleeve over a priority mail envelope. No box, but since it was one of my very occasional lucky days it arrived safe anyway.

  • Monsters of Templeton HARDCOVER

This novel by Lauren Groff, is a combo of fantasy, ghost & mystery story all rolled into one. Stephen King gave it rave reviews and that was one of the reasons I decided to read it. The story is set in the fictional town of Templeton, NY.....I understand the author is from Cooperstown and there is some similarities. We find that Willie Upton, finding herself pregnant by a college professor at Stanford where she was attending school, comes home to deal with being pregnant and to also find out some answers. She has always believed that she was a product of her mother's 1970's culture in San Francisco, but is more than surprised to learn that her real father may live right in Templeton. As the story goes on it becomes a genealogical study that will unearth some secrets from her family's ...

  • Exceptional read

One of the best books that I have read in the past year and I have a voracious appetite for "good" books. This book was a surprise in that it exceeded my expectation based on reviews I read. I was sorry to let the myriad of characters go when I came to the end of the book, not the least of which was the "monster" introduced in the first chapter. A rare blend of historical, fictional and contemporary figures and places made into flesh. Loved it enough to write this review (my first ever) and I look forward to the next book by Lauren Groff.

  • Loved it, run don't walk to get it!

Loved the intriguing writing, the historical exposition, the small current mystery. And the monsters- when will you find out about the element?? I'm not telling. But if you like a great tale, very interesting historical context, excellent family character development, a realistic but flawed heroine - then you'll very much enjoy this novel. I was sad to see it end, but satisfied with all the lose ends tied up.

  • Slow start, but great finish

I found this book a little slow at the beginning, but the perseverance paid off again. The flashbacks to the settlers of Cooperstown was the most interesting part although the author admits to "stretching" the facts of the story for her fictitious rendition. All in all, I thought it was worth reading.

  • Unique style

I enjoyed the unique writing style and format of this novel - how she interspersed various genres into her novel and used her own hometown as the model for the novel's setting. Be sure to read the Forward to the book before reading the novel - interesting history about the author and her real "Templeton"
