Reviews
"I have never read a better account of the country and the people I know so well.  It is a great story of a bootstrap-up, pioneering bush pilot.  Every reader will become absorbed with the story of Andy Anderson who made such a difference to the people, and in the transportation, in Alaska's Koyukuk Country." --Professor Ernest N. Wolff, University of Alaska Fairbanks (retired), "I've never read a book that so skillfully puts the reader into a bush pilot's head and so compellingly captures the drama, adventure, and misadventure of Arctic flying." --Cliff Cernick, Flyer magazine, "Andy Anderson stood out as the most generous of pilots and the most gracious of hosts." --Tom Wardleigh, Alaska Aviation Safety Foundation

Synopsis
Backed by Wien Airlines, former Navy combat pilot "Andy" Anderson pioneered post-World War II bush service to Alaska's vast Koyokuk River region serving miners, Natives, sportsmen, geologists, adventurers, and assorted bush rats. He flew mining equipment, gold, live wolves and sled dogs, you name it -- anything needed for life in the bush. He sweated out dozens of dangerous medical-emergency flights, "always at night and in terrible storms.", Backed by Wien Airlines, former Navy combat pilot "Andy" Anderson pioneered post-World War II bush service to Alaska's vast Koyokuk River region serving miners, Natives, sportsmen, geologists, adventurers, and assorted bush rats. He sweated out dozens of dangerous medical-emergency flights, "always at night and in terrible storms." llustrated with 50 historical photos and co-authored by one of Alaska's most popular writers, Arctic Bush Pilot is an exciting and sometimes nostalgic account of a pioneer pilot and his special place in Alaska aviation history., During the 1950s, former United States Navy combat pilot "Andy" Anderson flew for a small airline in Alaska. After World War II, Anderson pioneered air service to Alaska's vast Koyukuk River region serving miners, Alaska Natives, sportsmen, geologists, adventurers, and assorted eccentric back-country characters. He flew mining equipment, gold, mail, live wolves, and sled dogs, you name it -- anything needed for life in Alaska's remote backcountry.

  • Good reading if you like planes and the rugged north.

A good interpretation of of the hardships, dangers of aviation and life in the harsh northern conditions. I go for a walk off the trail for a quarter mile and i start to feel uneasy but can you imagine being say fifty or hundred miles from a nearest village, low on food and adequate shelter.

  • Gift

Since this was a gift to a pilot friend, I cannot give a personal rating. I did think the synopsis of the book was very compelling and if I were a pilot I would certainly want to enjoy this book. Just being honest with my position as 'giver' to a friend.
