About this product

Product Information

The now classic Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism is the record of two series of lectures given by Trungpa Rinpoche in 1970-71. "First discussed are the various ways in which people involve themselves in spiritual materialism, the many forms of self-deception into which aspirants may fall. After this tour of the sidetracks along the way, the broad outlines of the true spiritual path are discussed. The approach presented is a classical Buddhist one--not in a formal sense, but in the sense of presenting the heart of the Buddhist approach to spirituality. Although the Buddhist way is not theistic, it does not contradict the theistic disciplines. Rather the differences between the ways are a matter of emphasis and method. The basic problems of spiritual materialism are common to all spiritual disciplines."

  • A wonderful book for the Dharma student

This is an excellent book written by Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche on how to cultivate a true spirituality which emanates from the heart instead of spirituality which is used as a definition of oneself. The height of spiritual experience, for me, is when you find the nature of your spirit expressed perfectly through the words of an accomplished teacher. This book was that for me. What I had come to know of myself through meditation and insight was explained with words in ways I could never have expressed myself. It brought my Dharma practice from a perspective of practicing the exercises given to me to a perspective of the expression of my soul. It helped me turn my fumbling with chants, offerings, prostrations, and my understanding from within myself as to why I was doing all of this into a ...

  • Rethinking spirituality

It brings to light that spirituality can be viewed as a misguided process ,as an accumulation versus it's true nature of true advancement of the soul. This was a re-read for me and is a cautionary tale well worth hearing by one who endeavors on a path of spiritual progress.

  • So Real.

Great book. Very interesting if you are interested in this philosophy (or wisdom, if you prefer the term). He's as good a read as Pema Chodron, being her teacher. It helps to have the spiritual mindfulness of someone who has already been through what you are experiencing, and this helps keep your feet on the ground. There's a pretty interesting chapter on mentors. I haven't finished it yet, but it has been a delight so far.
