WiFi booster
The unit appears solid and decently made. I found it very easy to fit and it comes with full instructions if you're not that confident. I was more concerned with the linking aspect. As I am not a computer savvy type. It was a doddle. Again instructions included. All sockets work fine as expected. It would have been better if it had two u s b outlets. Worse than useless
I have confirmed what others have said; this thing slows *everything* down. I had a cold spot in the living room and bought this to replace a wall-wart Netgear extender that worked, but took up a socket and used a different SSID to the main wifi, which was a faff when moving between rooms. The socket is in the same position as the old Netgear extender. Did some measurements: - Download speed at router (i.e. the best I can expect): 7.2Mbps. - Download speed at socket position, socket wifi switched off (connecting direct to router): 5.3M . - At socket position using Netgear extender: 5.7M. - Same position using BG socket wifi: 0.3M with a 250ms delay! In practice this is unusable; everything just times out. In the cold spot - about 3m from the socket in direct line of sight, I get: - ... I have confirmed what others have said; this thing slows *everything* down. Yes it does boost signal strength in remote areas, but with those transfer speeds I might as well use carrier pigeons. I guess the problem is the link from socket to router, which is obviously specific to my installation, but both my phone and the Netgear extender seem to manage the same link OK. My advice, if like me you're stuck with it until you can be bothered changing the whole socket: pressing the little button 3 times turns it off.

Easy to attribute wifi 'issues' to wrong source.
I have the 'masterplug' one of these - seems to be identical, bar the name. A contributor with the best of intentions, has said his wifi booster unit of this type, 'resets' after 24 hours. Here's why I doubt this, although it may perfectly well be occurring... BT especially are known for rebooting your hub without asking first. They send some update, then silently reboot the thing, and of course, this may well have the effect, of ruining some parts of your setup they or another hub or broadband kit supplier know nothing about and consider meaningless to them. Then, there's the power blip or brown-out. Either a split-second of mains power loss to your home (does not even trip the RCD/MCB) or something of that nature. Very rare, but it has happened twice in my lifetime recently I know ... I have the 'masterplug' one of these - seems to be identical, bar the name. So while in no way criticising the contributor, I think he possibly has been let down by a different component part of his or her wifi setup, and it is that which caused the reset. Overall however, my unit is a lifesaver tech-wise, as we just upgraded to virgin and their hub is differently positioned to the old BT one. You can daisy-chain these in effect I believe, to propagate wifi some distance, I am going to temp use this for a garden outbuilding wifi method, until I get a signal up a mains cable to emerge more elegantly out of a booster box inside it. Tip - I fitted one to a surface-mount box and a short mains lead, so I can easily move it around the home, and just screwed it semi-temporarily into the skirting. Wife scowls, but she doesn't have to rip the wall open and fit conduit and mains cable and a brand-new twin socket where one does not presently exist. Awaiting two more, seems you don't exactly need one per room, but the new virgin wifi dies by about 10mbps every wall you go through, this is directly proportional to the wifi signal strength ie power of the wifi. You should be able to match this up to your router with the password, there are 2 ways to do this, but won't work in the UK. The 3rd way is the WPS button, but the only reason you would use your WPS is for visitors to use your WiFi on a one off basis, not for constant use because it auto disconnects every 24 hours and recycles. This means you have to reconnect every day by hitting your WPS on your router then going and pressing the button on the socket. Here's the problem, after the first recycle, it won't reconnect because my router thinks its being hacked. Therefore I wasted my money and my time for a socket that has an annoying blue flashing light on it.Easily fitted, but harder to install. The instructions are designed for the US market. Needs a plastic back box not a metal one on the 13amp point.
I could`nt get it to work at first so I went online and saw a review that said they wont work if there is a metal backbox on the socket. I changed the metal backbox for a plastic one, connected the extender socket to the plastic backbox and the extender worked straight away with a good signal. I am pleased with it now but wished the instructions had mentioned the metal backbox.
