EVANGELION, certainly one of the most popular, and arguably one of the best animes ever produced, is one of the rare sci-fi series that actually follows through on the ambitious themes and ideas that it presents. The series is set in the year 2015, fifteen years after what was supposedly a meteorite struck Antarctica, wiping out half the population of the Earth and leaving the rest to contend with rising sea levels and to figure out exactly what happened. Chief among the mysteries is the arrival of the Angels, an alien race who are possibly responsible for the subsequent attacks on Tokyo.<BR>DEATH & REBIRTH is a dramatic retelling of the series, offering the story from the various perspectives of the series's main characters. Its first half is a condensed version of episodes 1-24 of the series, supplemented with new animated sequences brought to life by the original voice-actors from the series. The last half of the film is an alternate version of episode 25 in which Seele, the secret organization behind the Evangelion and Human Complementation projects, tries wrest away control of the operation from its director, Ikari Gendo, out of fear that he is going to use the projects for his own purposes.

Great story, but UK version has quality issues
The re-telling of the end of the original Evangelion series with the new ending. The UK version of this DVD suffers bad quality in addition to being 16:9 inside 4:3 - meaning whatever you do, you can't make it fill your screen or look good. If you are a fan of the series, there is an original episodes worth of new content (taking into account that the second part on this disc is on the End of Evangelion DVD), which is a quick flash through the series with a couple of new bits. Someone new to the series won't get it probably, if you dive in here. If you are collecting the series, you will probably buy it just for this bit. The second part of this disc as stated above, where the story really starts, is on the 'End of Evangelion' feature - which does not suffer massive quality issues like ... Manga Entertainment, re-release this DVD!!
This DVD is a must have for any Evangelion fan. This movie has two parts; Death and Rebirth. Death summarises the Evangelion series up to episode 24, while Rebirth shows the true conclusion to Evangelion. Although, Rebirth ends on a cliffhanger (Carries on in End of Evangelion DVD). The DVD itself is great, but the only thing is aspect ratio. The DVD says it's widescreen which is partially true, but it's presented in 4:3 with black bars at the top and bottom. Therefore, it would look like a little rectangle on your 16:9 tv. In the end, I just cropped the DVD whilst watching it on my laptop. In my opinion, Manga Entertainment should re-release this DVD in it's true aspect ratio; 16:9.This DVD is a must have for any Evangelion fan. This movie has two parts; Death and Rebirth.
