Just as I remebered it as a kid!!
A bit talky but it is what I watched in the mid 70's along with many other shows of the time. If you like Star Trek, most likely you'll like this series. Remember it was the Mid 70's so aliens and the set appear cheesy but if you can get past the flaws, this Is really fun.!!!!

Had to get this set after finding it brand new on ebay for less than $45. This set out-does the previous two-disc releases by A&E not only price-wise, but includes a bonus disc with three of the first season episodes (which are also in the main collection), featuring running commentaries by: the two main story writers of the series, Sylvia Anderson--the Executive Producer of the first season (and then-wife of Gerry Anderson of "Supermarionation" fame), and a (to me, anyway) unknown, dyed-in-the-wool fan of the show. All who provide fascinating minutiae about the episode they are featured on, and the show in general. Likes (about the product): The discs in this box set come in the "slim" style DVD carriers, two discs to a carrier. This greatly reduces the amount of shelf space needed, as ... And for the most part, the video and audio are at least equal to the original broadcast-quality that I remember when this show first aired. Dislikes (about the product): In searching for this series, I had heard of a re-release by a British company with--from all reports--DRAMATICALLY improved Dolby 5.1 audio tracks and better digital restoration of the video. Unfortunately, this release was incompatible with Region 1 players, so it was not an option for anyone without a Region 2 or a worldwide player and a PAL television set. Why this DVD version of the series was not used for the North American megaset re-release I'll never understand. This is why the set only gets a "good" rating in this review. Likes (about the show): Year 1. I freely admit it. I am in love with the concepts and the slant the show took in its first season. Fave episodes: Black Sun; Another Time, Another Place; The Troubled Spirit; Dragon's Domain; Death's Other Dominion; Collision Course; and The Testament of Arkadia. I cannot imagine anything like these episodes being made by any American production company. Only the Brits, or someone less profit-driven would be up to the challenges of what these episodes, and really, the entire first season dealt with. As someone once commented about this series, Space 1999 was like "2001, A Space Odyssey" presented every week. Dislikes (about the show): Year 2. I freely admit it--and know some people will jump my bones for it. In an attempt to generate a bigger American following, Fred Freiberger, the guy who presided over the last year of Star Trek (and several other shows as well), was brought in. In so doing, the intelligence of the show dropped from "2001," to "Buck Rogers In The 25th Century"-level. Because of this, the two seasons are really two different shows, and most people will like one or the other--rarely both. This set would make an excellent resource for someone writing a Master's thesis on how NOT to improve a show's ratings. I had no problem with the two new characters, Maya and Tony Verdeschi. But I could not accept the way the existing central characters' personalities were changed (in an effort to make them more three-dimensional) along with some of the stories and their execution. I also missed Barry Morse, aka Prof. Bergman and composer Barry Gray's brooding, moody score. The show had become just too dumbed down for what I was used to. Compare, for example, "Another Time, Another Place" with "Brian The Brain." The difference will be apparent. There is a reason why all three episodes on the bonus disc are from year one.

Few shows today have the vast scope that Space: 1999 had. It was one of the most imaginative shows ever made. Many SciFi shows today modeled themselves after classics like this. In fact, I'd go on a limb to say that today's TV SciFi would not exist had it not been for people like Gerry Anderson (Producer of Space: 1999). Ever wonder why there are so many remakes these days? Because there is very little true imagination left, I'm sad to say. I wouldn't be surprised if they revived this series...they revived BattleStar Galactica,V, and the Bionic Woman didn't they? So,these movie/TV companies just build upon old ideas because these classic concepts are sound and had solid characterization. Space: 1999 has just that. Space 1999, flashback to SciFi forgotten
Moon Base Alpha torn from Earth's orbit and travels across space.... 1970's SciFi brings back memories of watching the show when I was a kid. Yes the show has some cheesy special effects, but it was the 70's and many of the other special effects were good ones even in today's standards. Season 1: Quickly moves from the "Oh no we've blown up and left Earth's orbit" to we have to settle in, and quickly start finding a new home. Season 2: Begins with finding a new member of the crew, a metamoroph, integrating her into the crew and well, that's pretty much all I'll tell you (no spoilers). Buy the collection to learn more.
