MONSTER MAGNET'S "Dopes To Infinity" a must-have album. By J
Monster Magnet. One of the most original, cutting-edge, surreal, enduring and just plain kick-ass bands of the last two-plus decades. Fronted by self-proclaimed Rock God Dave Wyndorf, Monster Magnet continues to push all conventions aside and do whatever the hell they want. Pioneering what I lovingly refer to as "Space Rock", Monster Magnet is truly one-of-a-kind. "Dopes To Infinity", their 3rd release, in this writer's opinion, is one of their GREATEST works to date. It just feels like everything fits into place on this record. In again, my humble opinion, this album seems to have become a template for some of their future releases. Songs like "Blow Em Off" and "Dead Christmas" seem like the original grooves that were updated on future releases like "Powertrip" & "God Says No". But here ... Monster Magnet. The first three songs (all connected like 1 big opus) really set the tone for whats to come- not only on this record, but with MONSTER MAGNET PERIOD. Tracks 1, 2 &3 (Dopes to Infinity, Negasonic Teenage Warhead & Look To Your Orb For The Warning) just rock so hard and fit together like Queen's "We Will Rock You" and "We Are The Champions": You simply just don't EVER want to hear them alone- they BELONG together. Same with this record. This record holds a special place in MY heart. I was lucky enough to be invited to the release party for Rage Against The Machine's second release "Evil Empire". As we all packed our way into Club Dragonfly and eagerly waited for Rage to take the stage, I heard something that would change me forever. The DJ was playing Dopes To Infinity from the beginning of the record to the end. I hadn't heard ANYTHING like them before, so I asked the DJ who they were. After that fateful day, MONSTER MAGNET has always been on my playlist. Dopes To Infinity really does showcase MONSTER MAGNET at their best. Along with their follow-ups, The INCREDIBLE "Powertrip" and "God Says No" and "Monolithic, Baby!" "Dopes" is a definite MUST HAVE. All you have to do is look at group leader and main songwriter/musician/lyricist and all-around rock-star frontman Dave Wyndorf and you'll know you're in for one hell of a ride. Dave is a musical mastermind (no pun intended...), creating and crafting almost every song HIMSELF, often times playing EVERY instrument on their studio recordings. In this writers humble opinion, he's one of the most underrated musicians working today, PERIOD. Their live performances defy explanation. They simply have to be seen to be believed. Dave Wyndorf is truly a rock and roll frontman, and you'd be hard pressed to find the like ANYWHERE today. To sum up, YOU NEED THIS RECORD. If you're a metal fan, or even jus a casual rocker, "Dopes To Infinity" is a masterpiece that will surly quench your desire for ego-driven space-rock. There's simply nothing like this band. Don't leave Earth without it
Well, if going on a trip into infinity means a trip into forever, going on and on and on, AND on, I would DEFINITELY take my Monster Magnet with me for the ride. I can listen to their music over and over and over and over and there's no ad nauseum ad infinitum... well, the music is fantastic in the truest sense. It has a blend of fantasy, science fiction, psychedelia, reminds me of comic book space heroes, of old SF movies, and it's just plain fun. I like the "tough humor." Comic book heroes, space cowboys oughta be tough. Vintage Monster Magnet is worth seeking out.
Monster Magnet fortunately is still going strong. For new fans this set from their early career demonstrates great potential. Fans of the band should seek this one out.
