About this product

Product Information

Thirty years ago the bond and option markets were dominated by traders who had learned their craft by experience. By the mid-1990s the old school grizzled traders had been replaced by a new breed of quantitative analysts, applying mathematics to the "art" of trading and making of it a science. A similar phenomenon is happening in poker. The grizzled "road gamblers" are being replaced by a new generation of players who have challenged many of the assumptions that underlie traditional approaches to the game. One of the most important features of this new approach is a reliance on quantitative analysis and the application of mathematics to the game. This book provides an introduction to quantitative techniques as applied to poker and to a branch of mathematics that is particularly applicable to poker, game theory, in a manner that makes seemingly difficult topics accessible to players without a strong mathematical background.

Reviews
"For those who think poker math is only about probability, pot odds, and straightforward, rote play, think again. Chen and Ankenman do a terrific job explaining how math can, among other things, show you exactly how to mix up your play in such a way that even champion players cannot get the best of you. Especially those who don't read this book." -- David Sklansky "Rear Cover"

As described... A+++ on shipping and price... C (and that's being generous) on time. If you have forever and a month of Sundays to wait around then by all means do so. The price was great and the seller communicated wonderfully and the item was packed well so it wasn't damaged during transit all A pluses in my book just took a little bit longer than I anticipated.

  • Deep mathematical theory without practical application

This book is a mathematical tour de force in using game theory and algebra to prove that different poker games require balancing betting, checking, folding, and bluffing, and how to determine the percentages of each; but only trained mathematicians would want these proofs, the rest of us just need to know how to apply it, which is missing here. The authors claim that readers with high-school level algebra can understand the arguments, but the notation used is standard for advanced college math, not high school textbooks. This book is the only one of its kind for mathematical theorists, but not the least bit useful for practical poker players. That said, I would never discourage anyone from taking on a tough intellectual challenge, so buy it and start reading if you're intrigued...

  • Tables

I saw this at a friends place and realized if nothing else all the tables make this more than worth the price. Sometimes the math is a little thick but I can get through it an understand it, the tables are the reason to buy the book.
