About this product

Product Information

From the thirteenth to the sixteenth centuries, outlaws reigned supreme on the contentious frontier between England and Scotland. Feud and terror, raid and reprisal, were the ordinary stuff of life--and a way of survival. Power was held by the notorious border reivers (the "steel bonnets," named for their flashy helmets), who robbed and murdered in the name of family: the famous clans (or "grains")--like Elliot, Armstrong, Charlton, and Robson--romanticized by Sir Walter Scott. In The Steel Bonnets , George MacDonald Fraser, author of the bestselling Flashman novels, and himself a borderer, tells the fascinating and bloody story of the reivers, their rise to power as ferocious soldiers of horse, and their surprisingly sudden fall from grace.

  • A history that reads like a well written adventure nove

I am writing a trilogy set in 16th century Scotland and France. While most of the action in my stories takes place in Edinburgh and in northern France, Thomas Kerr of Ferniehurst is prominent in my second book, and he was a notorious Borderer. And Marie Stuart's much maligned third husband James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell was himself a Borderer at heart. But I had little knowledge of the history of the border rievers. I had seen Steel Bonnets on a bookshelf a few years back, and thought it would be a fine source , so I ordered it. What I did not expect was to find it a true literary gem--on a par with Garrett Mattingly's Armada and Sir Winston Churchill's Life and Times of the Duke of Marlboro, which ranks it among my favorite histories. This is a fine addition to the library of anyone ...

  • STEEL BONNETS is THE CLASSIC book on the clan wars in "The Disputed lands".

STEEL BONNETS is (at least in my opinion) THE classic nonfiction work on the Border Reivers of the English/Scots border area. (As a descendent of one of those families of "notorious" BORDER RUFFIANS, I find it valuable to my family's history.) yours, tex JEREMIAH'S GENERAL STORE

  • Very good for later eriods but I would like to know about the 10th century through the 13th centuries as this is the period that really set the stage.
