About this product

Product Information

A panda walked into a cafe. He ordered a sandwich, ate it, then pulled out a gun and shot the waiter. 'Why?' groaned the injured man. The panda shrugged, tossed him a badly punctuated wildlife manual and walked out. And sure enough, when the waiter consulted the book, he found an explanation. 'Panda,' ran the entry for his assailant. 'Large black and white mammal native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves.' We see signs in shops every day for Banana's and even Gateaux's. Competition rules remind us: The judges decision is final. Now, many punctuation guides already exist explaining the principles of the apostrophe; the comma; the semi-colon. These books do their job but somehow punctuation abuse does not diminish. Why? Because people who can't punctuate don't read those books! Of course they don't! They laugh at books like those! Eats, Shoots and Leaves adopts a more militant approach and attempts to recruit an army of punctuation vigilantes: send letters back with the punctuation corrected. Do not accept sloppy emails. Climb ladders at dead of night with a pot of paint to remove the redundant apostrophe in Video's sold here.

    Punctuation in the right places

A great little book that will be relevant as long as intelligible grammar exists.

  • Most critical review

    Not what I expected.

I had bought this book for my daughter, as we both find certain punctuation mistakes and the resulting difference they make to sentences, hilarious. I imagined this book would be full of one line sentences with humorous errors, that you could just dip into but, instead, it was page upon page of full text, making it overbearing. Just my opinion, of course.

  • Good book if it’s what you’re interested in.

I read this book while working in publishing and after a few years of FB decided I needed to reread it to assure myself it was them and not me.

  • Genius!!

I bought this book for some insight into grammar. I've never been the best with apostrophes and semi-colons. I figured that this could be useful. And it was NOT what i was expecting. I actually laughed. It is useful, and although i havent finished it yet, it's definatly beneficial. Lynne complains about how apostrophes are becoming has-bins and need to be brought back into the spot light. Definatly worth buying, even if you're overly literate and educated in the ways of enlgish grammar. 5/5 :D

  • Far too wordy

The points on punctuation are valid and some examples very interesting, but all in all the book is far too wordy and self indulgent. Editing is sorely needed!
