I've owned a number of Surefire lights over the years, and the quality can't be beat. I'd wanted one of these for some time, but there are better options out there. My E2 Outdoorsman (AA-LED) actually seems brighter in a lighter package. I also have a two (2) Streamlight Twin-Task lights (123a) in the the same configuration (LED-Halogen) which, though heavier, offer similar performance to the Aviator for half the price. Surefire has come a long way with the technology, so, unless you're committed to old-school, I'd go with the E2 L-A with the 123a batteries.

My old A2 Aviator spent a year in the desert without issue, the low-light red LEDs are fantastic for vehicle operations, maintaining your night vision... press a bit harder and you've got white light. I have the old Xenon version and the original bulb is still going! Not as bright as a modern LED Surefire, but this is a tough light that offers unique functionality; Medics are fond of the blue LED version, for finding blood in the dark.
