if you are looking for something that won't leave your head, with toe tapping reality, this is it. But don't rely on the lyrics to speak volumes to you on those penned by Kelly herself. You can clearly tell who the writer is based on the title piece, (Avril Lavigne) and "Because of You", (kelly, et al.) Kelly, while a gifted vocalist needs to mature a bit in the writing department. ("Because of you I never stray too far from the sidewalk/Because of you I learned to play on the safe side so I don't get hurt"?) Not to mention Addicted, Addicted ("It's like you're a leach/Sucking the life from me") YEEEOOOWWWWCCCHHH! Filled with "angst"? Yes! Scary thought? Most definitely! Otherwise, if you are looking for something that will keep you company on a long car ride that you wouldn't mind letting others see you bopping your head to, this album won't do you no harm...because she actually makes up for some of those cheesy lyrics with her amazing vocal gifting. I say: Go for it!Read full review
Finally, the world is seeing the full talent of Kelly Clarkson who captivated our hearts as the first American Idol. In this album, she blends her soulful and powerful voice to beautiful songs of love and loss. Unlike other singers of her age, Kelly also brings a purity and maturity that sets a good role model for young women and girls. Kelly has reached that point in her career where she advances from generic singer to strong-voiced diva, making her excellent for young and old alike. I thoroughly enjoyed this CD and highly recommend it for gift-giving or for yourself! Rock on, Kelly -- rock on!
On this CD Kelly does an amazing job of making a name for herself, away from American Idol. I especially love the song, "Breakaway" for which the CD is named. Several of the song on this album have rocketed in the charts along with the album itself and rightly so. From slow and sombre melodies such as "Beautiful Disaster" to the rock influences in "Since You've Been Gone" the album is diverse and chock full of good music. If you have been avoiding Kelly because of American Idol you might want to at least take a look at this album. I can't bring myself to give this a 5 because no matter how much I may like the CD I know it's not going to be for everyone and alot of the songs are of course female oriented but that's going to happen with any artist/band out there. Otherwise the CD is fabulous.Read full review

Very few albums of 2004 have hold their replay value like Kelly Clarkson's sophomore effort Breakaway. From the wistful title track to the Benatar flavored finisher "Hear Me" she really give her all to each and every track. She has really come along way from her genre sampling debut. (Even though that was a pretty good album in it's own right) I decided to buy it after a couple of listens on Napster because many of the songs just grabbed me. For example, Because of You holds a lot of power discussing a legacy of being desperate and miserable. Since You've Been Gone is an infectious kiss-off. Although every single is high caliber some of the album tracks that haven't been released are phenomenal as well. One of my favorites is the dramatic and stunning "Addicted about a relationship which holds her captive like an addiction. I would say there is no bad song on the album. I definitely say this was one of the most satisfying mainstream albums of 2005.Read full review
