Pass this one up and you'll miss out on learning about one of the most extroardinarily talented men in the business of music in our modern culture. Tom Dowd is truly the father of the recording studio as we know it. Even if you're not interested in the technical aspects of such, you owe it to yourself to immerse yourself in the musical history that's presented here. Hats off to Mark Moormann for bringing the genius of Tom Dowd to the masses for us to see and feel what it was like to be in the infancy of Atlantic Records - the label that brought us so much musical diversity and entertainment. Tom Dowd was at the recording console for so very many musical talents that the list is literally a "who's who" of modern music. The thing that got me most about this is that the people who are sharing thier stories of a professional relationship with (and thier love for) Tom are for the most part, multi-millionaires. They don't need to say anything that thier heart didn't tell them to say - they're telling it like it is with no embelishment because they respect and love the man for helping them become the great musicians they are today. If you're not in awe throughout the film and if you're not totally blown away by Butch Truck's comments about Tom Dowd's incredible studio feat when the Allman Brothers were recording "Enlightened Rogues", you better check your pulse. There's interviews with many respected industry professionals as well as Eric Clapton, The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd and many others. Sadly, Tom is no longer with us. Neither are Ahmet Ertegun and Jerry Wexler from Atlantic records with whom Tom forged a relationship unlike any other in the history of modern music. In Wexler's words, "Tom's contributions to the development of Atlantic Records were inestimable - you couldn't quantify what Tom had done for us". Like Phil Ramone said, "you've got to be prepared to realize that your name might be in the small print on the back of the record cover if you're lucky". The print may be small, but Tom Dowd appears on the back of a LOT of the records that you and I grew up with. Homage is paid to the late, great Les Paul in here - as it should. Tom Dowd explains how Paul's multi-track technology comes into play and changes the music business forever. Ray Charles tells about how Tom Dowd came out to LA and built his first recording studio for him. The musical history lessons alone are worth the price of admission; the enjoyment you will savor after watching this one many times is simply incredible. Pick this one up - you'll be glad you did my friend!Read full review
