for the love of a princess
I had read this book back in junior high; a paperback copy was given to me by my Uncle (from his collection). I remember thinking it was so cool, there being pirates and monsters and aliens that look like humans but hatch from eggs and an early alien aircraft carrier and a lost human child posing as an alien princess. It had love, adventure, elements of danger, and romance, as well as political intrigue. The end was great, too, talking about the number of children born to the hero and his wife. I bought this copy for two reasons: (1) Nostalgia, and (2) I wanted to protect my paperback copy. Upon receiving this copy, I sat down to re-read it (not having read it for several years). I still enjoyed the book, but it did raise some interesting questions (well, one, anyways). The ... The princess figures out that the hero is merely masquerading as an alien male; it has to do with his anatomy (he has a belly button). What I'd like to know is: Why do the alien women on this planet need breastplates (the female warriors, that is)? If they are hatched from eggs, I doubt they'd need to breastfeed. And why would this alien races's genitalia be similar to humans? (The implication resulting from a conversation between the princess and the hero). Anyways. Those two questions of mine didn't creep up until later in the book (towards the end). It's definitely a product of the 1950s and the attitudes towards women. The princess goes back and forth between being strong-willed and weak. Even though the male human is at a distinct disadvantage on the planet, not having lived there or being aware of its various cultural differences, he rarely relies upon the princess's knowledge of her planet, its peoples, and its cultures. The way the relationship between the two develops is rather amusing, especially when it talks about how the hero's "cultured self" is constantly at war with his "animal self" and how often the "animal self" won in regards to his actions towards the princess. One thing that I thought was interesting was that I did not get the feeling that the aliens in "The Hand of Zei" were less than the humans. By this, I didn't get the impression that the hero looked down upon the aliens or consider himself superior. I think this is definitely different than the 1950s and the racial issues going on during that time (not just black/white relations but relations with other races as well). The aliens were not even close to the level of advancement (technologically speaking) as the humans, but the humans desired to protect the alien species and allow it to grow on its own. Most of the humans had a respect for the aliens and their culture that still seems to be lacking today. I'm not sure what I would compare it to. Possibly "Iceworld" by Hal Clement (where an alien policeman interacts with humans; told from the alien's point-of-view) or "Needle" by Hal Clement (similar to "Iceworld" but more from a human point of view). I'm not sure what other books I might compare it to; "Nightfall" by Isaac Asimov might be close (end of the world from the aliens' viewpoint). There are elements in it that remind me of Edgar Rice Burroughs and his novels (Tarzon, John Carter, and the Venus stories).
