Surprisingly straightforward rock!
In the wake of The Jesus & Mary Chain breaking up in 1989 John Moore went solo with this cd 'Distortion'. I was expecting much more innovative rock since The Jesus & Mary Chain were such pioneers in their fuzz noise punk rock in the '80s. Now this isn't to say this cd isn't a good one, on the contrary. It just took me by surprise at it's much more forward approach to rock. I will say that this would be a much more innovative cd for a more conventional artist. There are quite a few tracks that have a more bluesy approach to them like the first track "Hard Luck Story","Meltdown", "Heart of Darkness" & "On Broadway". When I say bluesy here I mean blues flourishes but not straightforward blues. The remake of "On Broadway" is quite good but I'm not sure the music world really needed another ... It has some very otherworldly, ethereal guitar work on it & there are some really interesting sound bites added that end up giving a whole different level to the song, a more seedy, underworld spin to the song. If I had to pick a favorite remake of "On Broadway" it would probably be this one. "970 John" is a hip, jazzy song which segues periodically into a blues/rock chorus with plenty of great saxophone & brass throughout. There are also some good hard rocking songs too, like the aforementioned "Hard Luck Story", "Mean Streak", "Perfect End", "Criticize", "Didn't Wanna Know", "Put Up Or Shut Up","Remember Me" & "Heart Of Darkness". There are several mid tempo songs like "Answered Prayer", & "On Broadway". And there are even two ballad like songs "Soul For Rent" & "Summer Song". Overall this is a great listen if you like your rock with lots of alternative & unusual flourishes I recommend it highly. It's great to see an artist stretching his musical boundaries & showing off his musical influences. Be warned though, if this is your first introduction to John Moore and you want to check out TJ&MC catalog, this solo cd is a far cry from the fuzz noise rock(ala Sonic Youth)of The Jesus & Mary Chain. Personally I love TJ&MC & have numerous cds of theirs but my tastes don't run towards what most people enjoy, so you have been warned! I highly recommend this cd so check it out because it is one that the more you listen to it, the more you notice & the "Moore"(lol)it grows on you. Enjoy!
