Synopsis
Since the 1600's the Isles of Shoals - off the coast of Maine and New Hampshire - have been the home of rugged fishing villages and grand nineteenth-century hotels. Today, they host marine research facilities and, on Star Island, summer conferences. But in winter, the Shoals are deserted. That's when Alexandra de Steiguer arrives. Alone for five months each year, she keeps watch over the buildings and grounds and natural elements the winter caretaker. For sixteen long, cold, windswept winters, Alexandra de Steiguer has lived virtually alone on these rocky islands in the north Atlantic. Stories and reflections on that life, enriched by insights most of us discover only fleetingly, are recounted in Small Island, Big Picture. Alongside her luminous, black and white photographs, she pens a graceful account of her unique situation. Sixty-nine stirring black and white photographs give voice to this rugged setting, accompanied by her stories and reflections that tell of how she learned to live in a very small place. Even while embracing solitude, she learned to value the connections between herself and the wider world. Alex shares with us the power of living in amazement of those connections, of loving the mystery of the unknown, and of re-examining what we think we know about ourselves. Though graced with beautiful images, hand-printed by the author in a traditional darkroom and then scanned for quality duotone, offset printing, this is no mere coffee-table art book. Rather, it is a small wonder of insights to be revisited again and again.
