DP review summed this camera up perfreectly when it was launched - "Once again we've got an otherwise superb Panasonic camera with an excellent lens let down by a noisy sensor, which can only be disguised, not solved, by heavy-handed noise reduction." "The TZ1 is one of those cameras that positively encourages you to take pictures, to experiment, to try different framing and viewpoints, and the lightning-quick focus and simple operation make it a surprisingly nimble operator too. It is all the more disappointing then, that the overall package is let down by it's sensor." But - Lumix never got over the noise problems with their compact camera sensors - every review you ever read says much the same as that for the TZ1; mechanics good - let down by sensor noise complicated by noise reduction programs that smear the picture --- and perhaps this was a deliberate marketing tool to make keen photographers invest in the much more expensive brands they make that perform so much better. This may explain why Fuji, Ricoh/Pentax and Canon cameras of the same era seem to be so much more desirable now for retro camera users.....and why so many people decided that phone cameras were, in comparison, not that bad. If you get one - then my suggestion to minimise the noise issue is [1] no prints larger than 7x5 and [2] learn how to use the Autobracket function and how to fuse 3x images at the lowest iso setting into an HDR image to avoid having to work with both noisy shadow zones and blown highlights in the same image.Read full review

Yes, it is a second hand unit but was sent with all the extras that a new one would including the operating manual and even a lens cover. Also received a memory card as requested even though this wasn't part of the original deal. Takes perfect pictures and the optical zoom is particularly useful for taking close-ups of wildlife and birds in trees. The battery isn't the best in the world but can easily be recharged using the charger sent with everything else. Like many items it isn't the easiest thing to use at first but with reference to the manual you can soon work out what settings you need, which makes operation quite straightforward. Downloading the images to a PC / Laptop is also straightforward with the option of a "direct" (for windows based programs) or "pictbridge" (for specialist programs) interface to choose from before the download starts.Read full review
