"Nostalghia" in the Russian sense of the word, evokes a response in the viewer Tarkovsky alone could transmit; single-handedly the film-maker challenges the viewer to question his/her own sense of place in the fragmented space we inhabit. We are all travellers, irrespective of national borders - but as human beings we have a choice to make as to how we choose to interpret our place in the setting. As an Outsider the choice becomes ever so much more significant and necessary to make. Tarkovsky and his screenwriter dance poetically to gift viewers with images which evoke memories beyond mere culture, positing existential questions regarding the place of the Outsider universally. Tarkovsky brings a synthesis to this film which encompasses his own moral, intellectual and spiritual outlook. Language and culture are relative to the sense and meaning we attach to words (poetic symbols); images such as those provided in 'Nostalgia' may temporarily provide solace for the Outsider: we are no longer alone. The film's shocking climax is predictable for viewers with an understanding of Tarkovsky's filmography and of the dislocation he was experiencing at the time this film was made - 'Nostalgia' may be Tarkovsky's final statement as a director. Within a year of making Nostalgia, Tarkovsky was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and the possibility of his Russian family being allowed to rejoin him was near, fleetingly near. Visual elements haunt the viewer and evoke a sense of nostalgia that so many of us can only feel in our minds, momentarily. I believe that Tarkovsky achieves his greatest success in this autobiographical film; for two and a bit hours we are allowed entry into the mind of a master and allowed to feel his pain/dislocation and fragmented artistic vision.Read full review
