I read this book a long time before seeing the movie,& got the movie to refer to,as a reminder of my own earlier days,as much as I did as a chronicle of the founder of "Gonzo Journalism."It is pretty faithful to the book. The person/writer,Hunter S. Thompson, before his death, was a counter-culture hero in himself,& expressed examples of writing which were personifications of the mindset of the drug culture mentality, while writing for Rolling Stone magazine. His anarchistic rejection of politics as a competent way to govern America, gave him what I would consider an honest perspective of all active political parties. He insulted Republicans & Democrats, with equal enthusiasm & was perfectly aware that he, himself, was lacking in a responsible outlook, describing himself in terms that were in recognition of his status as a drug-crazed loony.(I still also have a copy of Fear & Loathing On The Campaign Trail,'72,which,though it does not as well exemplify the perpetual insanity in "F & L in Las Vegas," gives you the same "Meet the New Boss, same as the Old Boss,"attitude, towards politics.) F & L in Las Vegas begins with he & his (later dis-barred) attorney rocketing towards Las Vegas,in a new, rented white Cadillac Convertible, just 'getting off' on LSD,with a trunk full of pot, several different psychedelic drugs, various "uppers, downers, laughers, screamers,"& a couple of quarts of hard liquor, plus a bottle of ether, with full intent to use all of them on the job, while attempting to drive the car, while being buzzed by dozens & dozens of hallucinatory bats. They later attend the motorcycle race, blinded by dust & sand,& attend the National District Attorney's & Drug Enforcement Officer's convention,&,among other activities, deal with being out of their minds on mescaline while attending the Circus Circus hotel & seeing both insane & obscene hallucinations. It is difficult to review this film, while at the same time, leave enough boggle to surprise the viewer. The man was both a gifted writer & a gun-toting,dangerous maniac, who eventually committed suicide. The movie is a breath-taking look into the mind & perceptions of one who is not atypical of the time.(Some people say that if you can remember the 70's,you weren't there.I differ.I was there. This movie,& another,Where The Buffalo Roam, both effectively communicate,in time- capsule form, what it was like, without enough of the penalties for intentional insanity, from the perspective of one Hunter S. Thompson.Read full review
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is an enthralling adventure. If you've never seen the movie before, I would highly advise you read the book first. The book, in my opinion, held so much more detail and overall better because of the use of one's imagination. You lose that concept when you watch a movie. Whether you read the book or watch the movie, either is a fantastic choice to make.
when I first watched this movie i didn't like it,(great let's make a movie about how cool it is to be on drugs) this movie was borderline some movies you don't like the first time you just need to see it another time and some you don't want to give them a second chance. I decided after talking to some friends about it to watch it again as they said pay attention to the acting and it also shows the negative affects of the drugs they are on. IT"S FUNNY AND TWISTED AND SCARY WITH GREAT ACTING IT IS A GREAT MOVIE.
What a great movie Johnny Depp is and outstanding actor. The movie is about a journalist traveling to Las Vegas to cover the Mint 400 race. Add a dozen different types of drugs and the fact that they are driving from Los Angeles leads to drug induced mayhem across the desert. I highly recomend this movie
Good quality, thank you

Great movie based on the book written by Hunter S. Thompson. In the movie johnny dep plays a journalist that heads to vegas to cover an event, but in the mix of drugs, sex and violence, he becomes his own story.Great movie, a must have. Also, check out some of hunter s. thompson's books, all very well written. Not to mention he invented Gonzo journalism, where you basically get involved with your work and write about it from the inside.
This is one of the craziest movies ever! Depp and Del Torro did a fantastic job of portraying the insanity and intensity that these characters would have been feeling. Probably not appropriate for kids, as the entire movie is about a drug binge in Vegas... I classify this one along with Requiem (?) for a Dream, Pulp Fiction, Clockwork Orange and others that are likewise off the beaten path of typical movie plots. Hope you enjoy!
Greatest movie I have ever seen. Johnny Depp Owns the role as Hunter S. Thompson. Benicio Del Toro is amazing as doctor Gonzo. Out of this world!
This has to be one of my favorite all time tripped out movies. Nothing about this movie makes logical sense, but that's why I prefer it so much. I suppose this movie to me is like Alice in Wonderland meets LSD, and yeah that suits me just fine! Ultimate stoner, or chill out movie... Highly Recommend!
