Excellent film work, unfaithful plot
"Based on a true story" just about sums this up. A love story woven around the true happenings of 1936. The action sequences and filming are stunning, even if you speak no German, the story & subtitles tell all. Now to the problems. If you don't know the story of Kurz & Hinterstoisser, you won't be bothered by the inaccuracies, I know the story. I thought the portrayal and casting of Toni Kurz was a bit strange. The medium height, happy go lucky young lad, full of life, has been portrayed as tall and miserable. The rivalry between the Austrian & German climbers seemed a bit harsh. I'm sure there was friendly rivalry, but this went a bit far. Considering the nazi overtones attached to the eventual summitteers two years later, the "climb for the fatherland" plot was probably spot ... "Based on a true story" just about sums this up. No way was there a girl involved on the mountainside, the idea that she even survived a night on the rocks is ludicrous. The choice of rescue ropes send a big nod to the oft contested theory that a longer rope was somehow lost during the rescue. There have been rumours that the 60m rope existed, but everyone involved kept quiet. Why is there always a rope cutting scene ? Both The Eiger Sanction and Vertical Limit have this scene, Touching the Void was one of the only times somebody has ever been cut loose in real life. The ending was a bit of a let down. Toni Kurz spoke his last words loud and clear with his last reserves of energy. To have his character whimper different words does a disservice to the man. A good film, but too many unbelievable bits, like most climbing films. The telling of the true story that this film weaves around is better told by The Beckoning Silence.

Total adventure, gripping and quality film.
This is a fantastic story about the extraordinary courage of the early mountaineers, in this case on the North face of the Eiger (German translation for Ogre!). The film is beautifully produced and acted catching the era pre WW11 as well as the magnificent scenery. One of the few films I could repeatedly watch. A gripper from start to finish!

NORTH FACE DVD
Although, in the description,there was no information about the film being in German with English subtitles, it is an excellent film- with superb quality picture and sound. I bought the ordinary DVD, which sounds brilliant over the surround sound system, but wished I had paid the extra few pound to get the blu-ray having now read the reviews of those who did buy the blu-ray.

Good film if your into mountaineering
Good. I have read some critism of the pointless love affair but it was no way as pointless and annoying as the one on the film Titanic. The extra bit showing how they did the computer effects was great.
