Cecilia Roth stars in this celebrated film from Spanish director Pedro Almodovar. Distraught over the death of her teenage son, Manuela drives to Barcelona to find the boy's father, an itinerant transsexual named Lola (Toni Canto). While combing the city's less reputable districts, she also meets up with Agrado (Antonia San Juan), a sassy transvestite prostitute, and Rosa (Penelope Cruz), a pregnant nun on her way to El Salvador. She also becomes the manager for Huma (Marisa Paredes), the actress her son idolized, and helps her through a run of A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE. Together these great ladies bond through various heartrending crises, enduring the pain and celebrating the beauty of being women (or almost women). Considered to be one of Almodovar's most fully realized works, this charming and unique film blends his earlier gender-bending irreverence with the mature grace and compassion of his later work, striking a perfect note of humor and pathos.

All About My Mother
The death by accident of a mother's much loved son compels her to go to Barcelona and inform the father, who doesn't even know of the boy's existence. Finding the father is not so easy and by going to Barcelona, the mother digs back into a world she had left behind in order to bring up her son. It is a sordid but colourful world with transvestite prostitutes, junkies, an AIDs riddled nun, divas, and the usual associates of one's past. Remember that this is Almodovar, not Ivory-Merchant. However, these people are not displayed as freaks, but portrayed sympathetically. Almodovar celebrates their lives. He does not pass judgement. Like other Almodovar films, the complex story line shows the strains that pull apart and bring together relationships. The emotional lives of the characters are ... While there may be melodrama, there is a strict avoidance of sentimentality. The acting is wonderful, especially Cecilia Roth, who for some reason reminds me of Hannah Gordon. My only criticism is the use of coincidence. This is also a feature of other Almodovar's films; but here he stretches it a bit far. For instance, first the Cecilia Roth character steps in to take the part of an actress in a professional stage play, to great acclaim, and then when she leaves it, her transvestite friend, who as far as I know has never acted in his life, effortlessly takes over. This is a small criticism. "All About My Mother" is a splendid film by a great film maker. Without being a dreary feminist polemic, it is a celebration of women in all their roles: as mothers, as lovers, as carers; and to those who want to be women. Warmly recommended.

Almodovar's finest movie.
"All About My Mother" is, in my opinion, the greatest movie of Pedro Almodovar, and one of the best movies I have ever seen. It is a tragicomic explosion of love, lust, addiction and destruction, but also friendship through thick and thin, and acceptance of who you are.

an excelent film
An amasing Almodivar film, a must see by any audience. This film is a good example of Almodivar's skill and brilliance. THe amasing use of cinematography and mise-on-scene adds to the contraversy of the topic presented in this film.

Well worth a watch. Sad and funny in parts. Better than most of the stuff that is on TV these days. Ever had a strange relationship? Yes? Bet its nothing as complicated or strange as the relationships portrayed in this film.
