I Love This Creepy Thriller!
I finally see the darkness. John Carpenter’s slasher horror thriller Halloween (1978) sends chills down my spine as a young babysitter is chased by a serial killer armed with a knife on Halloween. Carpenter’s direction is fantastically drawn out with a slow burn feel. Carpenter makes sure to establish every corner of each house and the whole town’s general layout so that you feel enclosed into this small suburban Illinois town being attacked by a crazed sociopath named Michael Myers on the loose. Everything feels authentic and scary because of the genuine 70’s atmosphere and quiet moments followed by John Carpenter’s iconic piano and synth laden score pounding away at your psyche. All of Carpenter’s neat musical stabs hurt like the knife. He’s as talented a composer as he is a director ... I finally see the darkness. Halloween may be John Carpenter’s best picture with his finest direction. John Carpenter and Debra Hill’s script is excellent and precise without wasting any time. Their story about an escaped, deranged sociopath named Michael Myers is chilling. They quickly establish Myers’ sick past of repressed sexual jealousy and mad violence, then get you endeared to the cute teenage heroines going about their normal coming of age teen drama. Halloween preys upon America’s fears of home invasion, stranger danger, serial killers, mentally insanity, and paranoia over being followed. John Carpenter understands that tingling sensation that lets someone know they’re being watched. Halloween is well written as Carpenter’s words allow audiences to clearly empathize with everyday teenagers, frightened children, concerned parents, worried psychiatrists, terrified nurses, and even attempting to explain a murderer’s mind. You’re never bored for 91 minutes as every second feels tense like an impending force is coming to get you. Paranoia builds with Charles Bornstein and Tommy Lee Wallace’s slick editing taking you around town with quick cuts to shocking jump scares. Dean Cundey’s cinematography is phenomenal with long held shots on the killer just out of frame or in the distance alongside extended panning shots down streets or hallways. You are never suspecting, but always anticipating the killer to appear because of how carefully languid Cundey’s camerawork is on purpose. Halloween holds up as one of the most frightening screamers ever shot. Tommy Lee Wallace’s production design makes every scene look like a real neighborhood to add to the horrific idea that this could happen in your town. Craig Stearns’ set decoration dolls up each home to appear identical to an average suburban household’s furnishings. These homes look lived in, which helps you to believe this could all be a real danger in life. Erica Ueland’s make-up is great with running make-up on the crying girls and scary deformed make-up on Myers. Everything is top notch even the cute 70’s costumes. Donald Pleasence is fun as the deathly afraid and disturbed with fear Dr. Sam Loomis. His smart insight into Michael Myers’ rage and bloodlust is interesting, while Pleasence’s fearful faces looking down streets all over Illinois is engaging and entertaining. I would be remiss if I did not praise Jamie Lee Curtis for captivating you as goody two shoes babysitter Laurie Strode. She’s a brave, female lead with brains and resourcefulness that is nice to see in a horror film. Curtis seems very sweet and natural as a shy high school girl and nurturing babysitter. You like her gentle, cautious nature and Curtis definitely seems the smartest of her friends. You feel sympathy when she’s scared and pain when she’s hurt as you cheer her on against the evil Michael Myers. Curtis is just alluring and fun to watch in her introductory role as a scream queen in Halloween! P.J. Soles is fun as the dumb blonde friend Lynda van der Klok with her lustful boyfriend as she is very playful and curious. I have to mention that Nancy Kyes’ teenage babysitter Annie is adorable and cool with her silly teasing and clever taunting. I feel like Annie steals the show whenever she’s on screen throughout Halloween. Nancy Loomis as she was credited then is enchanting and playful as Annie as she ignores common sense all to try to hook up with her boyfriend in a cavalier manner. She’s such a fantastically fun character. Lastly, Nick Castle is frightening and imposing as the massive murderer Michael Myers known as The Shape in the credits for his silhouette is enshrouded by shadows often in Halloween. Will Sandin pulls off the perfect blank expression as the child version of Myers. In all, Halloween is a classic horror picture from the American auteur John Carpenter.
