First of all, please note that many people listing this book use the pre-filled info on Ebay which erroneously identifies the 5th & 6th Standard/Deluxe edition as the 'Abridged' version... simply put, the abridged version states 'Abridged' directly on the cover; if it doesn't, then it's either a Standard or Deluxe. That said, I own TWO versions: Standard 6th Edition (1992), and Abridged 7th Edition (2000). Also, the difference between Standard and Deluxe is cosmetic. IMPORTANT NOTE: After issuing the 6th edition of the Standard/Deluxe versions, West removed the case citations in subsequent editions, so if you are looking for case citations and notes regarding any precedent for a term, get a 5th or 6th edition of the Standard or Deluxe version. Furthermore, there are many terms in a Standard/Deluxe 6th edition which are not found in an Abridged 7th edition; in particular, many of the Latin phrases which are the basis of our legal lexicon. This may be true for all abridged editions. HOWEVER, there are just as many -modern- terms found in the newer Abridged editions which are -not- in the older Standard/Deluxe 6th & 5th editions. Thus, if you are a lawyer, paralegal, or just want a more complete resource of both historical and modern legal terminology, get a combo similar to mine. I find the pronunciation guide and typesetting of my Abridged 7th edition to be superior to my Deluxe 6th edition. The 7th edition is phonetically based, while the older style is what you would find in any classic Webster-style dictionary. If you are just looking for something to use as a laymen and/or to get a feel for basic legal terminology, look at Barron's pocket legal guide and if it suits your needs, pick up a 7th or 8th edition of the Abridged version of Black's. But if you are a law student, paralegal, or plan to read or write anything court related (affidavit, brief, etc) or are involved in any sort of legal action, then you should probably get the standard/deluxe edition. As a final example, in the abridged version, a selected term/definition may occupy half a column; whereas in the standard/deluxe editions, the same term may occupy 2 pages worth of definitions, various case citations, and usage examples. Take the time to study and innerstand the terms that are used in the courtroom and get your power to fight the full force of the law back into your own mind. It is not easy to grasp at first, but through in depth learning, it is possible. And remember, you are worth it! Life is too short to be thrown in a prison cell and rot away for some power hungry prosecutor/&/or judge to make money off your lockdown! It is a big money maker for them to put innocent people away for trumped up charges. Gain the knowledge necessary to overcome these grifters, and while you're at it, help others with your power gained! Wholeness and balanced vibrations. My Economics Theory professor had asked another student "What is the legal definition of X?" I decided it was time that I find the one book that would give me the "legal definition" of everyday words in our vocabulary. You don't have to be a law student or a lawyer to use this book either. It is very user friendly and a lot of fun to read. It also gives the meaning of Latin phrases and words commonly used in communications. I LOVE this book!
