An Entertaining and Clever Version
From a young age, my uncle exposed me to the great composers. First, via cassettes, then via CDs. My first encounter with The Magic Flute was through the Classic Kids adaption on cassette. It was, by far, my favorite. I spent many nights lulled to sleep by its story. As I've grown, I've sought out any and every version of The Magic Flute I could get my hands on. I was quite enthused to see that the Met's interpretation was released on DVD. They do a good job of balancing the "old" tale with a "new" flavor. The costumes were a little... unconventional to me, but it is the Met. The music and vocals were outstanding, as can be imagined. As usual, Papageno was the highlight role. What the Met brings to the table that really caught my eye is their staging and transitions. Again, while more modern in feel, they did an incredible(!) job of shifting from scene to scene and the staging was perfectly fit for the dialogue/action. Of all the renditions I've seen, this one was the most impressive in that regard. What surprised me the most that I didn't care for was the number of creatures played by puppeteers. The Queen of the Night's ladies, for instance, were depicted as ghosts? specters? While a whimsical concept, I didn't care for the execution. I also found interesting the connection they created between Sorastro and Eastern spirituality/tradition. Everyone has their interpretation of his order (I've seen Egyptian, Greek and Roman as well as generic monastic). This one seemed to both fit and not fit. Overall, this an entertaining and clever version of The Magic Flute.

Searching high and low
I love this opera, I remember the first time I watched this was during PBS' winter fest when I was about 9 years old, and I remembered this opera all this time, Papageno in particular. I am incredibly happy to finally have this dvd in my collection, and it was a very reasonable price as well. I would recommend this feature to lovers of opera, plays, or musicals.

Opera great for kids
Very fun production geared for children especially as a way to introduce opera to them. This was purchased just for that purpose for an 8year old boy. I have seen this production live and thoroughly enjoyed it and I am MANY years older than 8.....well, there is an 8 in my years!
