Caution: I'm old enough to remember when TV programs and movies were made in black and white. Maybe that is why I find Brian Benben and Wendy Malick hilarious in the early HBO series Dream On. Martin Tupper (Benben) was reared with television and movies from an earlier era often serving as babysitter and mentor. Consequently, he often interprets the vagaries of his own adult life through this black and white lens. Add this to the fact he is newly divorced, navigating both old and new relationships, is a book editor for a B grade New York publisher with a dysfunctional secretary, and has a smarmy TV talk show host for a best friend, there is plenty of material for hilarity. I only regret the show ran for two seasons, but it is a good example of early HBO programming and the rich quality of productions to come. It illustrates the creativity and genius often lacking in broadcast television.Read full review

Subject says it all. Brilliant, hilarious, with a lead so lovable you’d follow him down virtually any path. Cannot recommend this series enough. One can only hope the rest of it gets released one day and that all of it gets the proper HD treatment that it so sorely deserves.

It's a shame that the remaining seasons are not available. This show was superbly cast, and the stories with the blending of old footage is amazing. Somebody had to have done a lot of homework to get the footage that fit perfectly with the storylines. C'mon, get the remaining seasons out there for us to enjoy!

Watching Dream On, HBO's debut into original programming, you can clearly see why HBO has dominated the Emmys for the last few years. Dream on is a completely original concept that has been copied by numerous other shows (Herman's Head and Andy Richter Controls The Universe to name two. It follows Martin Tupper (played brilliantly by Brian Benben), a recently divorced New Yorker who spent way too much time watching television as a child so he uses clips from old black and white movies and TV shows to help him emote. Try not to laugh as clips of a boxer getting the crap knocked out of him play in his mind as his ex-wife tells him that she has no interest in coming back to him in the series premier. The chacters are well-developed and engaging, and we can see why Wendi Malick (as ex-wife Judith) has been so successful in many different series as her sense of timing is truly amazing. Dream On is definitely an adult comedy,so watch only after the kids are in bed! Whether you are new to the series or an old fan (as I and my wife are) you will relish this show and will watch the episodes over and over again for years to come.Read full review
This show cracks me up. My wife thinks it is a 3 stooges thing or something (she doesn't find it funny) but I love it. I guess not everyone appreciates this type of humor (old film clips let you know what the main character is thinking-going through). I find it hilarious! And as a down-trodden wpm I relate. Very funny.
