Die Entwicklung von Biokraftstoffen in Indien konzentriert sich hauptsachlich auf den Anbau und die Verarbeitung von Jatropha-Samen, die sehr reich an OEl sind (40 %). Die Grunde dafur sind historisch, funktional, wirtschaftlich, oekologisch, moralisch und politisch bedingt. Jatropha-OEl wird in Indien seit mehreren Jahrzehnten als Biodiesel fur den Dieselkraftstoffbedarf abgelegener landlicher und forstwirtschaftlicher Gemeinden verwendet; Jatropha-OEl kann direkt nach der Gewinnung (d.h. ohne Raffination) in Dieselgeneratoren und -motoren eingesetzt werden. Jatropha hat das Potenzial, auf lokaler Ebene wirtschaftliche Vorteile zu bringen, da sie bei geeigneter Bewirtschaftung auch auf trockenen, marginalen, nicht landwirtschaftlich genutzten Flachen wachsen kann und Dorfbewohnern und Landwirten so die Moeglichkeit gibt, nicht landwirtschaftlich genutzte Flachen zur Einkommensgenerierung zu nutzen. Auch auf makrooekonomischer oder nationaler Ebene bringt eine erhoehte Jatropha-OElproduktion wirtschaftliche Vorteile fur Indien, da sie die Importrechnung des Landes fur fossile Brennstoffe fur die Dieselproduktion (der Haupttreibstoff im Land) senkt und die Ausgaben der indischen Devisenreserven fur Treibstoff minimiert, so dass Indien seine wachsenden Devisenreserven erhoehen kann (die besser fur Investitionen in industrielle Produktionsmittel verwendet werden koennen).
