It is generally acknowledged that without such a strong start, the Doctor Who series would have had a short run and probably been largely forgotten about. In the early days of TV many shows were broadcast live and there was no market for repeats as a back catalogue had yet to be be built up. Videotape was very expensive back then and so those shows which were recorded were often 'wiped' as there was not considered to be any commercial justification for keeping them. If only the TV executives could have hitched a ride into the future in the TARDIS! Another incorrect assumption was that, with the advent of colour, there would be no demand for old black and white shows (although TV showed lots of old B&W feature films). Doctor Who began transmission in 1963 and it is a testament to the ... Doctor Who began transmission in 1963 and it is a testament to the talent of all those involved that there is still a market for even fragments of the early stories nearly sixty years later. The Hartnell and Troughton Doctors were very much free spirits who, although Earth based, flitted around space and time with very little constraint, which the writers took full advantage of. Although the series is/was generally classed as science fiction, many of the early stories had an ethereal quality about them. Unfortunately in the final Troughton adventure, the epic War Games, the authority of the Time Lords finally caught up with our errant Doctor and he was exiled to Earth. Doctor Who would never be quite the same again. When parts of Doctor Who were eventually released on VHS in the 1980's some of the older stories were definitely showing their age technically.. 'Lost in Time' was released onto DVD in 2004 by which time digital restoration techniques had restored some of the earlier episodes to probably look even better than they did originally because a 405 line TV system was in operation in the UK until the late 1960's when the 625 line upgrade was completed. 'Lost in Time' comprises three DVD's containing eighteen complete episodes from the Hartnell and Troughton eras. Some episodes have commentaries and, as you would expect from BBC DVD's of the time, there are plenty of 'extras'. Since its release, a few more episodes have been found and some of the adventures released in their entirety, via a mixture of restored footage and animated reconstructions.

A feast for the fan of Dr Who. It comprises random incomplete episodes and other material from the early days of this sci-fi classic. Probably not suitable for those wanting complete stories, but a treat for those who remember the era are interested in seeing how televisual effects etc have moved on.
