This is my third Humminbird combo, I started with a 3" black and white, then moved up to a 5" color, and now the 597 CI HD DI. All have been very reliable and easy to use. All have been mounted in my MB Sport 200 LX, a water ski boat. I really don't do much fishing, but I do a lot of wake boarding and surfing on all the small lakes around Puget Sound in Washington State. DI (down imaging) gives a whole new meaning to underwater viewing. It's almost like having a camera under the boat. At slow speeds, weeds, logs, stumps, and rock are easily seen. Not just as changes in bottom contour, but very distinctly as in individual leaves or branches. Quite amazing. There are many different "views" available. I especially like the full DI screen with depth and water temperature in the left corner. I chose the amber color option for this screen and under a bimini, the underwater detail can be seen most anywhere in the boat. Really great for "seeing" what under the boat while searching for the warmest water for swimming or surfing. The GPS function seems VERY accurate, and though the supplied Unimap doesn't have much detail, it seems well suited for my needs. I thought I'd invest in a Hotmaps or Lakemaster SD chart, but the DI seems to give me all the information and detail I could ever need, so no purchase expected. The other GPS functions like "mark" or "go to" work seamlessly as other nautical GPS's I have used. GPS speed is a very useful function for my ski boat. Most small lakes have extensive "no wake" slow speed zones that are fun to cruise. The standard twin water pressure speedo's don't work at slow speed. The GPS measures speed to 1/10 mph. Very handy. All three of my Humminbird units have been used units, purchased on Ebay. No disappointments. I have noticed some misinformation about this unit on various listing. The 597 IS 640 x 640 pixils on a 5" diagonal screen. It has very good definition. The DI model has shallower maximum depth that the standard CI HD model, about 300' DI, and about 600' in standar sonar. Perfect for my use. I was considering the new Helix model, but decided the adjustability and the convenience of the Quick Release system was still the best option.Read full review
Installed on a 2008 pontoon boat. Replaced a 383 Humminbird with the new 597. No comparison between the two. The down image mode views are great. Tree stumps, an old cabin cruiser and some underwater fences look just like they should be. Have located several new brush piles with the new unit. Still learning what all it will do.
nice fish finder! I have a Lowrance elite-5xDSI and this Hummingbird is the part of the whole package I was missing. They compliment one another perfectly, to get the whole picture of whats in the water. The Hummingbird has a lot that the Lowrance is missing.
Good color and sonar but the navigate menu will not work so I have no GPS.
