Well i decided to build myself a retro windows 98 and XP gaming computer based on the nForce 3 chipset with an AMD socket 939 CPU, the motherboard is an MSI ne02 Platinum - this cooler is twice as good as the stock cooler, the cpu is a 4200+ dual core and even overclocked it never goes above 62c which is pretty incredible really. The graphics card is a 7800GS 256mb AGP 8X which is brilliant! and very fast for retro 1080p gaming. although to keep things authentic and period correct i'm using a samsung syncmaster 15" lcd that has a native 1024x768 resolution at 75HZ, so i can literally play any game maxed out at 75hz smooth as silk. windows 98 loves the 1024x768 resolution, 95% of the games from this era are in this resolution. Its quiet not silent but very quiet even on full. And as i say it does an amazing job of keeping this processor cool, with the added bonus of it being a "top down" cooler meaning it also cools the surrounding VRM area. This is a picture of my 939 system fully customized, i completely modded the case, added an LCD screen and built my own 2x20watt amplifier and VU meter, fitted internally with speaker sockets at the back to plug in to a pair of wharfedale diamond 9.1 speakers. Ive even built the illuminated Nvidia badge at the front, this cooler works perfect in this machine and does an excellent job, i highly recommend it!Read full review

I am not sure if it is quieter than the stock AMD fan but while it is quiet, it is not silent as you can still hear it whirring when it is working. It just hasn't got the annoying high frequency whine with a lot of cooling fans. Fitting is a simple case of clipping the plastic clips on to the heat sink supporting frame on the motherboard which is a lot less fiddly than the stock unit with the metal locking mechanism.

It's actually a great cooler, the low price is a bonus. It runs of 4-pin, so is backwards compatible with 3-pin sockets too... But is nicely controlled through 4-pin socket motherboards. It is near silent and when tucked in a computer under a desk is even quieter. Despite this, it is still nice and cool, able to handle office/home CPUs with ease. It's not designed for gaming, and might not perform well in this area, but as long as you are in the 70 watt CPU range this is a great choice. Pair it with some branded thermal paste for even better results.
