My husband was kind enough to buy me a version of this vast reference guide for one of my Classics undergraduate modules a couple of years ago. On the day that I received the book it became one of my desk top companions, and continues to remain so. I find this book to be an excellent reference guide, and I never leave its pages without a list of potential primary sources to ponder, or a different way of approaching the topic I had been researching. I find the book very easy to peruse because of its alphabetical layout, indexing, and suggestions for further topics at the end of many entries. Some more significant topics have larger ‘feature’ entries, such as ‘Homer’ or ‘Alexander the Great’. The book also includes a number of other helpful components, such as diagrams, photographs (of artefacts), maps, and a ‘thematic listing of entries’. Really I can’t recommend this book enough, either for study or just a general interest. This guide has certainly been my companion to classical civilisation.Read full review
