The Sennheiser PXC 450 headphones are the best that I have owned. I read reviews about these headphones, and was very skeptical that any noise canceling headphone could even come close to Bose; however, after testing at the retail stores, I was convinced. Yes, Bose has competition out there, and Sennheiser brings it. The sound is crisp, and I am able to hear subtle sounds that I was never able to hear before, making tracks i have listened to before even more pleasurable. If you are looking for overpowering bass, then pass these by and get some Dr Dre's. The headphones are balanced so that you can hear all nuances of music, not just bass. The Senneheiser PXC 450 are over the ear and are extremely comfortable, even after 10-12 hours of wear. The noise canceling feature works via one AAA battery. If the battery drains, you can still use the headphones without any noise cancellation. Activating the noise cancellation with the headphones on is like immersing yourself in a cone of silence, to borrow a phrase. Want to read a book in peace and quiet-put these on. A great feature is the talk through button. This allows you to bypass and mute what you are listening to and hear and speak to others in a conversational tone. The only thing I would change about the headphones is the placement of the bypass switch that bypasses the noise cancellation feature. It is a little hard to get to, but that is a very, very minor and almost not worth mentioning.Read full review
I have not tested other similar high profile headphones like Bose, Audio-Technica, AKG, Pioneer, Beats, etc to compare to, but my first impression on these headphones regarding sound quality is awesome. I love hifi music and enjoy it deep. These headphones offer excellent, crisp, clear, incredibly well balanced sound, you don't even realize from where the music comes from. I even turned off the equalizers, sound boosters, virtual effects, etc in the mp3 player and enjoyed flat sound as I never did before. Music performance is excellent even in passive mode (bypass) than with the noise cancelling feature activated (normal). One important thing to me is that noise cancelling mode is an option, you can hear music even when the battery is exhausted. Most of reviews are coincident that noise reduction is not too much, and I agree. Consder that noise canceling is only in the very low frequency range. It's not 90% as advertised in the box, but it's just enough to me to enjoy music in noisy environments without the need to increase volume too high and you feel isolated surrounded by pure music. There is no pressure on the eardrum as many people complaint of Bose QC that for most reviewers seem to have superior noise cancellation, in some cases I felt some pressure in one ear but I solved tilting the headphones appropriately. Must take into account that the PXC450 are high impedance headphones because they are intended to be used in airplanes (adapter included). In case of listening to music with cellphones the maximum volume will be inevitably lower, because they expect headphones with lower impedance. In this case I recommend the use of a portable amplifier, I use FIIO E6, which is small, compact and with a long lasting battery. It pumps up music without distortion. The PXC450 are a beauty in all senses, besides the impressive music quality they look stylish and robust, made with high quality materials for heavy use. Maybe look a bit bulky, but this is not a concern to me, the case is hard and made to last. They are exceptionally comfortable, ear pad cushions are snug and quite soft, you can use them for hours without getting tired. The Talk-through button is simply great, just push it, music stops, and you can freely talk with anybody, push it once and return to enjoy your music back again. These headphones are so high quality music that exposes how poor many recordings really are. If there is something to correct is an alternate cable with in-line control and mic to take calls, nowadays I have all my music in my Android cellphone! Anyway, you can add a headset hands free adapter to control calls as I did, as the headphones have it's own volume control. In summary, the Sennheiser PXC450 sound great, feel comfortable and they do a fine job of canceling noise.Read full review
Lets be honest, no headphone will be perfect to remove the sound of a plane or any constant sound to nothing, but to reduce as well as the PXC does; I have to admit I was surprised on its long performance on a single AAA battery. I suggest this 100% as an option away from the other brands. These are not for abusive hands, and its not a BEATS replacement, but it will be worth for those who want as close to the silence that once can get!

I was looking for a compatible headphone to the Bose QC2 and QC3's, read about the SennheiserPXC450 as the one. Correct with the Bose as the better "noise cancelling", but for range and sound, Sennheiser may be right there especially with the addition of a music amplifier. Having a pause button to speak through is a plus, and now using a "cover the ear" head phone seams to be much better than an "on the ear" pair. I purchased a very lightly used Sennheiser and am very happy with the purchase. Prices vary but are nearly equal in costs, used or new.
